Island Fall Fishing Picks Up

Greetings from the island everyone. Hope all of you are doing well and staying in great health.

Well, Fall is officially here, yay! As I sit here at the small kitchen table writing the article and having a cup of hot coffee, I know that in a few days a nice cool norther will be blowing in. Don’t you think that coffee tastes so much better on a cold crisp morning? Well heck yea it does! The aroma of percolating stout black coffee permeating the frosty kitchen air, listening as the flock rooster begins his morning ritual of blaring his crows across the island. Oh yes, come on northers, the muggy salty island needs your brisk coolness.

And with October on the island also comes the nice catches of redfish and the start of the flounder Gulf migration. It’s been fun for the islanders catching some nice reds along the bay shoreline and in the beach surf when it’s been calm enough. Just basically fishing from the shore with finger mullet caught in the cast net, a very simple and relaxing way to fish. There have been a few times that within an hour of that redfish swimming in the water, it was caught, cleaned and frying in the pan . . . now THAT’S fresh fish!

It is this time of year that I begin stocking my propane freezer for the winter months. During Dec – Feb, instead of running in for supplies every 7-10 days, it might be two weeks before I can get in due to the weather and low tides. I really enjoy late Fall and Winter on the island, but being prepared requires a bit more planning.

I want to wish my mom, Leona Lucille, a very happy birthday in a few days. We had an early get together for her last week and it was great. I love you mom.

Well, that’s it from the island for now, everyone take care and have a great day.
