BEWARE OF WHERE YOU WALK!  One of our residents, a 7th grader, has been bitten by a rattlesnake in her yard.  After being hospitalized in San Antonio, receiving anti-snakebite/venom shots and being kept in the ICU, she was able to return home.  So do be careful!

Have you seen the incredible works by our wonderful Dragon Lady, Gloria Fric and her wonder crew of dynamic and talented sculptors?  Sadly for Gloria her crew of artistic-sculptors has been whittled to one, but Karen Fralich from Canada is so beautifully talented she takes the place of others.  And once again, 200 tons of that special sand for sculpting has been delivered to the site in front of the Community Center; properly wetted down, and set for the artists to get to work.  And the designs are incredible; one of my favorites is a slightly hidden message for kids to stay in school, or they get swallowed by the SHARK!

I’ve been covering the Warriors’ Weekend from the very first when some of us stood out on the highway waving a welcome to the buses as they arrived; stopping and taking pix of the first group of boats anchored at Froggie’s ready to take another guy on board; and many of us making cookies to be delivered at 6:00 in the morning for a day’s food on board a fishing boat.  But that was long ago; now we have our incredible and talented lady, Gloria Fric, the Dragon Lady to put into sand what we have thought and wished for many years ago.  Thank you, Gloria; you and your very talented team are what makes this such a wonderful and touching celebration.

Once again the membership of the POC Service Club held their Garage Sale despite bad weather!  Luckily, many folks decided that the inclement weather would not make a dent into their purchases; and, therefore, we were extremely lucky  to have so many folks deciding to come and see us and search for their very special item.  Besides, the Bake Sale was sold out EARLY EARLY; and I do hope you were there to get your tasty treat!

Several of our residents have been attending the monthly meetings of the Water District to learn what plans are for our area; although I don’t have a date for the next meeting, POC residents need to attend these meetings to learn how, what, and why the Board is spending the money from the recent tax increase, and make your thoughts known. Suggestion would be to check the bulletin board at the Post Office for a meeting date and time.

Keep your eyes going for the New Old Hurricane Junction being built at 2441 West Maple, just around the corner from Froggie’s.  Despite unforgiving weather, the pad has been poured and is in the process of curing.  Shortly the walls will be erected, the roof topped off, the exterior deck built, and HJ will be on its way! Several new people are on board for Hoop: one being a very talented and innovative cook, Dalene Sagebiel Caffey, who is in charge of the kitchen, and the other being Abby Wheeler, a talented and amazing bartender.  Both of them are experimenting with new and tasty recipes, and Abby is being challenged as she creates a special and innovative drink.

Many of the children in our school will be winding up another year of education under the leadership of Ms. Tiffany O’Donnell, the principal.  And once again our school has been honored by the State Education Agency receiving an award for a High Performance School and the School that has achieved much progress during the past year.  A High Performance School is rated under the Title I designation of schools as achieving distinction in reading and mathematics.  Our thanks to so many dedicated teachers and their assistants who made this possible.  But to our students who never gave up, but continued to work to improve their skills, we honor them.

Hopefully, many of us have followed the amazing results of the incident concerning the bus driver and the pupils misbehaving aboard his school bus.  It really makes you wonder as to who has the authority over the childish passengers to make them behave his orders?  Or does this caveat strictly rests with the school administration?
Do you ever question the prices for an item?  Or, do you, like me, question and accept an unbelievable price for 10 pieces of food at a fast food joint?  Stopping at one and ordering chicken, I sadly discovered I was paying $2 for each piece of chicken, many of which were completely unidentifiable.  Sad … !

June will be arriving shortly and with it will be the Summer Reading Program at our Library.  Do plan to come and see and talk with our knowledgeable Librarian, Shirley Gordon, for more information to sign up your child.  Library hours have not changed being open all day Monday and Tuesday; afternoons Wednesday and Thursday; and Saturday till 1:00 p.m.  Or call Shirley at 983-4365.  See you soon!

A very Happy Mother’s Day to all our Mothers and Grandmothers as well.  Hope you all had a wonderful and happy day with husbands and children both young and older as well.  And it’s time to let someone else cook!

Also a thank you to the many residents of our community who have helped those incredible artists and other members of Gloria Fric’s crew.  Each year more and more of our people turn out to help in many ways.  Just hope you eventually get that extra sand out of your shirts and pockets!
