POC Service Club is successfully completed their 2017 Fall Garage Sale on Saturday, October 7th. We didn’t let a storm stop us, unseasonably hot weather stop us, or overwhelming demands of other jobs and projects stop us. We raised money for our community projects and scholarship fund, we had great homemade baked goods for sale, we helped a charity with their ongoing outreach with the items leftover after the sale; but This sale was a little different. We had a ministry group in the process of rebuilding homes for more than 200 families that came early Saturday morning and selected furniture and home goods for some of those they are helping. We encouraged those who came to the sale needing items after the hurricane to take what they needed for free or a simple donation. And we made our famous $1 Bag Sale free or donation only beginning at noon.

We knew that extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. So, we worked hard to make things available that people in our community needed. It was a great experience for all of us who worked, and we say THANK YOU to all of you who donated, volunteered, shopped, and helped. Our community is recovering and we were honored to be a part in this way.

Our Spring Garage Sale is already set for April 7th, and we are taking donations of quality used goods for that sale. We ask that you please be aware of any lingering mildew, mold or damage and do not donate those items. If you have donations, please call Linda Orrick at 719-650-3433 to make arrangements. Thank you for your support of our efforts.

There is much to do in our community this time of year. Groundbreaking for the new library is October 27th. How exciting! The annual carnival and costume contest is bookended by the Chili Cookoff benefitting the new library earlier in the day and the Trunk-or-Treat and door to door fun later in the evening on October 28th.

The annual Thanksgiving Community Service and the Community Thanksgiving Basket project will require all of us this year as we have much to be thankful for, but also have some who need some assistance to make it through this holiday. If you would like to donate to the Thanksgiving Baskets distributed to those in need in our community, please give at any area church or the First National Bank. Your gift made payable to the POC Benevolence Fund will help families in need.
Our 2017 Senior Christmas Lunch is December 1st at 11:30 a.m. and the Toy Run and Boat Parade are December 2nd. Chamber is looking for locals to enter their boat in the parade, so consider being a part of this fun tradition.

Harvey delayed our annual officer election, but we did approve our new officers late in September, and they are hard at work. Volunteering in our community at the school, churches, Tuesday lunch, library, Chamber and other places keep our club members hopping. We have community projects in the works and are proud of some recently completed. Congrats to Linda Orrick, President; Donna Vichard, Vice President, Michelle Overton and Sam Burnet, Co-Secretary and Recorder; Peggy Elliot, Treasurer and Pat Ekstrom, Parliamentarian. These women will serve until September 2018 to guide our group to ever better work.

Maybe you are looking for a place to serve, a way to meet new people or just something rewarding to do. Come join us. Our calendar is full and we have all kinds of opportunities to fit your skills. We meet at the POC Community Center on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m. Women of all ages are welcome to join us.

So, until next time, be safe, live simply, love openly, forgive generously and remember this great quote by the late great Audrey Hepburn who said ‘As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.’ Bring your one hand and add it to another and we can make a big difference.
