Calhoun County Airport (KPKV) is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Calhoun Air Center Art Contest winners. The winners and family gathered at Calhoun County Airport on Saturday, November 20th for the local Art Contest’s Awards Ceremony. Entries in three age groups were judged the week prior by the Port Lavaca Art Guild. First, second, third place and two honorable mentions were chosen in each age group. The 2012 theme was “Silent Flight.”

“This year’s art contest theme, Silent Flight, gave the students a lot of latitude as to what they could base their submissions on, and the artwork that they came up with was truly impressive,” said FBO manager, Steve Plunkett. “Everything from serene hot air balloon landscapes to comic book styled scenes was present and I look forward to seeing how they do at the state level.”

The fifteen winners were awarded art kits and prizes specific to aviation. The airport’s local art contest is structured around The Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) International Aviation Art Contest.

All of the 2011 entries will be submitted to the 2012 Texas Kid’s Aviation Art Calendar Contest which is designed to motivate and encourage children to study aeronautics, engineering and science. Each child will receive a participation certificate from TxDOT Aviation Division in spring 2012. Winners compete at a state, national and international level. Calhoun Air Center has submitted over 700 entries in the past three years from Calhoun County students.

The winners of the TxDOT International Aviation Art Contest will be announced by February 2012; winning contestants along with their family and teacher are invited to TxDOT’s Texas Aviation banquet which will be held on March 29, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. at the Moody Gardens Hotel in Galveston, Texas. Following the state-level contest, winners will have their entries sent to be judged nationally.
