Bunco! Would you believe that Bunco in July is gonna be Tuesday, July 3rd? And that is the day BEFORE Independence Day? And our hostesses are once again the innovative Biddie Hileman and fun-loving Sally Jones? Just watch out for firecrackers and other surprises knowing those two! Bunco will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the back meeting room of the Community Center, and play will commence following the usual array of delicious foods. We welcome all interested women on that evening; if you are new to our area, this is a good way to meet others. And if playing Bunco is something you’ve never had time for, well, you will certainly enjoy yourself, so come check us out. You could go home a winner too!
There were many winners at the June confab including the winner of Most Games, Joyce Jordan with Evelyn Lewis coming in a close second. And Biddie was honored with the prize for Least Games. Shirley Gordon won not only the Most Buncos but the Floating Bunco prize at the end of play. And your humble correspondent was graced with the Booby Prize but Sally Jones came in a second (Booby?). Call Shirley Gordon at the Library for further information, 983-4365.
And speaking of our Day commemorating the Independence of the Colonies, do not forget that there are many activities scheduled during that week here in POC. Our fireworks will begin on Saturday evening the 7th at dusk (9:00 p.m. more or less), and speaking of the fireworks, money is still needed to finance this event. The very skillful and talented Donnie Haynes is chief setter-off-er of this display of pyrotechnics for everyone’s delight, but without the necessary funds, this display will be limited. Please contact the POC Chamber of Commerce “Fireworks” at POB 701, POC 77982 if you can help.
Also on that Saturday, the 7th, the Volunteer Fire Department will be holding their annual fund raiser, a BBQ Dinner With Plates To Go including various extras plus beautifully and sumptuous desserts as provided by the Ladies of the Service Club and other Ladies throughout our Community. Serving begins at 11:00 a.m., and if you’re not there early, you may be disappointed. The Volunteer Fire Department has been in operation here since 1952 and has 20 volunteers who answer their pager instantly when called. Replacement of equipment is desperately needed as much of it is old, and the budget from the County does not suffice. Therefore, donations from our Community is what keeps our Fire Department operating. Please remember, as you get your delicious plate of food, to be generous.
Coming up shortly is one of the big fishing tournaments of the year and that is Pescado Grande on July 6th and 7th that benefits The Harbor of Port Lavaca. This is the 22nd replay of this event with all happenings to be located at our Community Center Pavilion. Starting Friday Night, July 6th, is the night of the Calcutta, a dinner with meal tickets being free to the entrants, and only $7.00 to others. Saturday night holds the weigh-in with prizes, a live plus silent auction and a delicious fish fry with dinner tickets being $7.00.
Speaking with the Executive Director of The Harbor, I was astonished to learn that the members of The Harbor have been putting this fishing tournament on by themselves for a number of years. But I really shouldn’t have been astonished; they’re just women!
If you are unfamiliar with the activities of The Harbor, I hope I can familiarize you with their major work. The Harbor is not a place where a woman can go to avoid other abuse or a child to escape being battered; this is not an area that houses others. What it does and why it is beautifully staffed with very intelligent and proficient women is to provide the necessary input from patients to a caring temporary hospice. Last year they served over 75 patients, and will be able to help more in 2012 due to your support of this fishing tournament.
Just saw the listing of Fishing Tournaments for this year! Wow! Lucky me, though, I have a front row seat of the participants and visitors of POCO! With my camera too! And following the Pescado Grande is Cula Roja on July 13th & 14th, but the big one will be Poco Bueno on the 18th through 21st of July!
Although the work has just started on the widening of 1289 to 238, traffic has not been hampered, as of yet. Widening and paving the shoulders will definitely be an asset for us traveling to Port Lavaca, but I understand that this will be a project lasting 3 years or longer. I just commiserate with the kids in September traveling to school.
Hope you all had the opportunity to view the many flags that were set up on the highway leading to the Community Center during Warriors’ Weekend, and do hope that you had the chance to thank the Club members and their husbands for this very patriotic display. The plan now is to put some up by the Front Beach for the 4th, possibly by the Fishing Pier, which will add to our enjoyment of our special Day.
This is now the middle of June and visitors are coming into the RV parks to spend a month or two. We welcome you to our neighborhood, but please treat ours like yours. We have an excellent Library, 3 boat ramps with a bait house nearby and a beautiful front beach to picnic on.
Ever noticed what happens with a long standing empty lot that suddenly has one large item appear there? When, in a very short amount of time, there will be boat trailers and boats, construction equipment and lumber and other supplies and a variety of other items? It’s sort of fun to watch … .
Service Club members: A reminder, again only one meeting in July which will be Thursday, July 5th! Told you that this IS a busy week!
Vacation Bible School was quite a success with over 70 children attending each day. Thanks go to Candice Stryker for a job well done and to the high school youth for all their help. Also, understand that the “Star” cookies were definitely enjoyed!
