BUNCO! The next gathering of the Bunco group will be Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. This energetic group meets once a month to spend time rolling those dice while commiserating about the hot, hot weather. It may be 100+ degrees outside but the cool determination of the ladies playing defies that heat! There were many winners and only 2 Elviras present at the last session, and the winner of most games was a guest, JosieKate Cooley, and to keep it in the family, the 2nd most games’ winner was Diane Cooley. But Malinda Wilson grabbed the prize for the least number of winning games.
Repeating herself once again was Shirley Gordon as the winner of the most Buncos, and Shirley shows that she has the quick fingers to grab that prize. Sarah Kay Reneau carried off two prizes: that for 2nd most Buncos and for the Floating Bunco. And Peggy Elliott brought up the rear with the Booby prize and she and Carol Haverfield will be our hostesses for the September Games!
We meet in the back meeting room of the Community Center, and play will commence following the usual array of delicious foods. We welcome all interested women on that evening; if you are new to our area, this is a good way to meet others. And if playing Bunco is something you’ve never had time for, well, you will certainly enjoy yourself, so come check us out. You could go home a winner too! Call Shirley Gordon at the Library for further information, 983-4365.
Incidentally, our Library has really become a center for community activity as during the summer months a tutoring session met there. And last year the Bunco group took advantage of the space in the evenings, and it has often become a place for an interview. For this availability of the Library, we can only thank Ms. Shirley enough. Unfortunately, we have run out of space to fully provide for this community. Perhaps soon … !
Reappearing in Port O’Connor is Lorene Webb who had made her home here for many years. She now lives in the Conroe area but returns to our area to visit with her son and daughter-in-law, John and Joyce Jordan. Not sure how long this lovely lady will be here, but do hope to see her around.
If you attended as a guest or member the last meeting of the Lions’ Club, you would have been fortunate to hear the guest speaker, Mr. Bill Alexander of Channel 25 in Victoria. Mr. Alexander is the meteorologist for that Channel and he gave an extremely interesting and quite topical talk. Although stating several times that he was not that qualified as a speaker, he certainly acquitted himself quite well with lots of information concerning our coastal area and weather, namely the potential for unwelcome hurricanes.
Attention Service Club members: The regular schedule of meetings, the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, will start on Thursday, September 6th at 10:00 a.m. This meeting agenda will feature the election of officers, a proposed schedule for the coming year, and payment of our yearly dues. Please note that if you have a change of address or telephone number, notify the Membership Chairman or the Treasurer as you pay your dues.
Have you noticed in the beautiful early mornings accompanied by a slightly warm breeze that lots of pelicans are flying over the many boats moored at the Fishing Center? Starting the day with that scene in mind really makes arising early worth while. Though I often feel that an extra hour wouldn’t really hurt!
OK, barbecue food addicts! We now have two spots in our area for providing excellent and tasty plates to go: Art’s at the corner of the highway and Byers Street and Leroy’s at 14th & the highway. And Leroy’s will be open again on the 25th for your dining pleasures, while Art’s opens every weekend from Thursday till Sunday, or till he runs out of food.
And for great sandwiches, stop by Jocelyn’s in that crazy yellowy-orangey building on the highway; I understand that they make their own bread! And Cathy’s, always for their excellent buffet or chicken fried steak and then Josie’s for authentic Mexican food! Then there’s Mama’s for a great breakfast and Captain G’s has the biggest hamburger in town! See, you can’t go hungry in POC!
Keep your eyes open for the incoming shrimp supply; have you noticed the size? Wow!
School starts again on August 27th, so be sure to watch out for kids crossing the streets.
