Letter to the Dolphin:
I’d like to address “Name Withheld by Request” regarding the letter about golf carts. Yes, golf carts and utility vehicles, along with automobiles, boats, etc. should be operated within the law. However, you seem to be nit-picking about the definition of golf carts.
All I can say is: SERIOUSLY???? With the economy, U.S. citizens being murdered abroad, families (possibly some of your neighbors) struggling to put food on the table, do you have nothing better to complain about?
Port O’Connor is not incorporated. I started coming here in 1969 and moved here because I love the country lifestyle and sense of community in Port O’Connor. I love being able to jump on the golf cart go somewhere and not getting my car out for days and weeks at a time, saving gas. Then people like you come down here and start complaining about the definition of golf cart?? That’s like someone coming here and then complaining about hearing airboats and gunshots because of duck hunters.
If you don’t like the way this community operates then I suggest you take your happy self back to where you came from because I’m willing to bet you aren’t from here. Find a real issue to worry about and quit trying to rain on everyone else’s parade!
Proud to sign my name…

Re: “Are We Losing America?”
I have a comment or two to make to Jim Hummel about his column Are We Losing America? in the last issue of the Dolphin Talk. You said you were a lifelong Republican until 2008. I guess that means you decided like so many others that Barack Obama was the new Hope and Change for America. That is almost understandable, because so very many people decided the same thing, and he became the first Afro-American President. But if you really used to be a Republican, after almost 4 years of Mr. Obama taking over private industry with tax payer (your) dollars, ruining the economy, escalating the national debt, creating positions for CZARS, not cabinet members, by-passing Congress repeatedly and plunging race relations back into the 19th century, how can you now say it is the Republicans who are moving us away from the Constitution?
And you consider the Tea Party to be radical? You have obviously leaped conveniently from a RINO (Republican In Name Only) to a total liberal democrat. How can you NOT see the new breed of Republicans (the Tea Party) are winning elections all over the nation because they want to go back to a Constitutional Republic? Is it radical to go back to THAT? We were never intended to be a democracy.
Your slippery slope quote is very well known to all of us who are worried about just that very thing. The problem is, it is NOT the Tea Party that is taking us down that path. Somehow you have been blinded by the lies of the Obama administration and of course the media encourages that. I blame the media for more people being ignorant and mad all the time, than I do the people we elect to represent us, who when elected go ahead and do whatever they want to, just stay in power.
At this point in history though, I think you should be more worried about the slippery slope of sliding into Islam, than the semantics of whether we are a Christian nation or not. No one wants to talk about it, no one wants to think about it, no one wants to believe it, but that does not mean it is not always a continuous threat. Islam reminds me of a termite colony…it works tirelessly and relentlessly, and no one really sees it or thinks about it until all of a sudden the structure is compromised and then the entire foundation collapses. But by then of course, it is too late and everyone says, “OMG! We never even knew they were there.”

Letter to Editor:
CCCC held its 4th summer series at Faye Sterling Park under cloudy dark skies. At first the group was small, but by five p.m. we had about 150 or more people in attendance. Scheduled were various events which included the presentation of Mr. Ray Davila being recognized as Outstanding Citizen and being presented the key to the City by Mayor Jack Whitlow. Mr. Davila and his family members have been good family role models, contributors, and strong supporters to this community and organizations.
Scheduled also was a jalapeno eating contest, but much to our surprise there were no takers; even though antacid medication and milk would be made available.
The Grito Contest ended in a tie with Gabby Correa of Cuero, Texas and Alex Hernandez, Jr. candidate for State Representative.
The breaking of the Piñata and its goodies were enjoyed by the children.
Ann Smith’s, The Dance Company provided dances from the Region of Nuevo Leon, Mexico and closed the fiesta with the Jarabe Tapatio in celebration of El deiz y seis de Septiembre, Mexico’s Independence Day.
Music was provided by Robert Ojeda and Bronze. Included in the group with Mr. Ojeda is Carla Jones, vocalist; Arturo Foncesca on drums,; Raymond Moreno on guitar; J. Orta on key board. They continue to play a variation of music, whether it is Tejano, country and western, or the golden oldies. They provide music for everyone’s enjoyment.
In visiting with people in attendance, comments were thanks for such an enjoyable, relaxed evening, good entertainment, and providing something for the visiting people. We had people from Galveston, Victoria, Cuero, Jackson County, and Colorado. The visitors were able to enjoy tacos and tamales at the fiesta or had the option to go across the street to Texas Traditions for an excellent variety of food on their menu, or homemade desserts, stroll downtown and shop in the unique stores.
The Calhoun County Culture and Cuisine would like to thank, for the support and participation of Dallas Franklin, Russell Cain, Ralph Cormier; Anita G. Fricke, Wes Wyatt, Mayor Jack Whitlow.
Prosperity Bank and International Bank of Commerce of Port Lavaca for their give-aways, Asian Magic for hair cut gift certificates and Paul Guzman of El Patio for gift certificate for our drawings.
But most of all thanks to the people in attendance which help us make this a continued success.
It is the goal of the CCCC to feature various different ethnic groups each month. Next month, will be the German Oktoberfest. If you would like to feature, serve a German dish, or help provide entertainment, please give us a call. Next event will be Saturday, October 27.

Prayers for Clint
I just wanted to give everyone a little update on how our son, Clint Williams is doing since his motorcycle accident in Germany back in July. Clint has been traveling weekly to San Antonio from Port O’Connor for medical appointments. He has once again scored above average on the tests they gave him. He is making wonderful progress and the doctors are expecting a full recovery to occur once his skull replacement surgery is completed, hopefully in October or November. Thank you all for the continued prayers for our sons progress and recovery, it has really meant a lot to all of us!

My Two Cents Worth
Jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs. I have seen jobs being done in POC and Houston, and I am sure they are the same all over our country. What I see are men pouring slabs for new houses, men framing those houses, men putting roofs on those same houses. Men working the non-union docks in Houston. Men working at Hormel meat packing plant in Austin. Men working at Pilgrim Pride chicken plants.
The problem is that most of this work is performed by illegals. That’s my two cents worth.

Assault Weapons Ban
I just read James Hummel’s letter concerning “assault weapons.” While he may know about hunting in Wisconsin, he evidently doesn’t know much about hunting in South Texas. If he were to be charged by wild hogs like my son was some time back while hunting near Mission Valley , he would be wishing he had an “assault rifle” with a large capacity clip. Two shots aren’t enough to bring down a pack of wild hogs. You don’t have time to jack cartridges in the chamber or reload. You can very easily be hurt or killed by hogs. Too, if someone is trying to get into my home, I would want more than two shots if necessary. Some shooters just enjoy collecting and shooting this type of rifle, just like some people like to have a 200 m.p.h. car. No one needs a 200 m.p.h. car, but they still sell them.
He also has serious flaws in his support for banning semi-automatics and large capacity clips. Those who support such laws always forget that such laws only affect the law-abiding citizen. The criminals and insane ignore the law anyway and will always will be able to illegally get anything they want. The shooter in Aurora had already broken several laws, so why would more help? Don’t encourage giving up our freedoms as you will just give impetus to those who want to ban all firearms.
A 2nd Amendment Supporter
A point by point comparison in response to Great Reasons to Support “Mittens” by James Hummel, September 14th edition:
Great Reasons to Support Obama
1. He’s “articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” according to Joe Biden. When he first took office, he embarked on an overseas “apology tour” on taxpayers money which offended the sensibilities of US Citizens who are proud of the exceptionalism of their country.
He has offended our longtime closest friend and ally, Great Britain, on numerous occasions: removing a bust of Churchill from the Oval Office, giving “thoughtful” gifts of DVDs and an iPod to Prime Minister Brown and Her Majesty the Queen, betraying Britain by disclosing information on her nuclear capability to secure Russia’s support for the New START Treaty, siding with Argentina during the conflict between Britain and Argentina over the Falklands, and declaring France as our strongest friend and ally (France? Really?). Just to name a few.
He committed to making peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians a priority from Day One of his administration, but the incongruities of his position have caused each side their “fair share” of being offended. From his U.N. impassioned call for Palestinian statehood to a threat to veto membership unless the Palestinians made peace with Israel just a year later. From refusing to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to insults about the PM caught on open mic in an exchange with France’s President Sarkozy. This just scratches the surface of the offensives both sides have endured.
2. He is rumored to have had an affair with a campaign fundraising consultant during his run for the US Senate who abruptly closed her lucrative consulting practice and moved to Martinique.
3. He refuses to release enough information to determine whether there are any scandals/skeletons in his closet. He campaigned for a more “open government” and “full disclosure,” but will not unseal his medical records, his birth records, or his passport records. His school records for the elite K-12 prep school, Punahou School, he attended in Hawaii are “lost.” His team of lawyers has blocked the release of his Occidental College records, his Columbia College records, and his Harvard Law School records. His Columbia thesis is nowhere to be found. All of his legislative records and scheduling records from his days as an Illinois State Senator are mysteriously missing.
4. He can’t deliver a speech without his teleprompter, revealing his true vision for “fundamentally transforming” the country and “redistributing the wealth” when off script. He’s shown contempt for members of the Tea Party by referring to them by the derogatory term “tea-baggers,” and for people in small-town America by claiming “they cling to guns or religion.” His campaign ads have been proven false time and time again, yet he and his surrogates continue a deceptive depiction of his opponents.
5. He appears highly intelligent and educated, but who knows what his sealed school/college records would actually reveal. By his own admission, he spent his college years seeking out and associating with known Marxists and Socialists which added another layer to the foundation that was laid by his teen mentor Frank Davis Marshall, a publiclly identified member of the Communist Party USA.
6. He smokes, he drinks, he admits using marijuana and cocaine. He touts the taxpayer TARP bailout of GM as a success of his administration despite an additional $27 billion that Treasury will need to recover in order to recoup its total investment. The government still owns 500 million shares of GM and needs to sell those shares at $54 each for the government to break even on the bailout. (GM stock closed at $24.8 on Friday 9-21-12, you do the math!). What he doesn’t include in his boasting is the closure of around 1500 GM dealerships with a job loss of approximately 63,000. Nor does he brag about preserving the UAW members’ costly pension funds at the expense of roughly 21,000 salaried employees of Delphi, a GM auto parts spin-off company, who lost the majority of their pensions, as well as their life and health insurance . And then there’s the growing list of taxpayer funded bankrupt “green energy” companies: Solyndra, Ener1, Beacon Power, Evergreen Solar, and on and on and on. Perhaps this is fodder for an additional “Great Reasons.”
7. He represents a fundamental change of government and a divisive social agenda with a belief in abortion on demand including partial and live birth. He has added more to the national debt than all 43 prior presidents before him. Gas prices have soared to an average of $3.72 from $1.85 on the day he took office. He favors investing taxpayer money into “green energy” rather than ease regulations or approve projects such as Keystone that will lead to a decreased independence on foreign oil. Unemployment remains high, job creation is stagnant. His policies of more government regulation are is stifling business growth.
8. He did not serve in the military or the reserves. Troop confidence in the overall job performance of the Commander-in-Chief has plummeted to an all- time low of 25%. He submitted a proposal to have treatment for service-connected injuries charged to veterans’ private insurance plans as a means of reducing expenses of the VA. He has implemented “catch and release” rules of engagement when capturing insurgents and policies of “cultural sensitivity” that the troops have to abide by. Combat troops are getting “sensitivity training” directly on the battlefield about his new policy on gays.
9. He claims to be a Christian. He attended Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago where Reverend Jeremiah Wright was pastor and his spiritual mentor. Rev. Wright is well known for preaching Black Liberation Theology and for his racist and anti-American rants. But he also talks about his Muslim faith and described the Muslim call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.” He has failed to issue proclamations or personal statements about Good Friday and Easter, but has released statements recognizing the observance of major Muslim holidays and heralding Earth Day. He has never hosted an event recognizing the National Day of Prayer, and has waged a War on Christianity with his health care mandates.
10. There are no records of who paid for his private schooling in Hawaii or his college education, records are blocked or missing as previously noted. He purchased his home and a portion of the adjacent lot in Chicago’s Hyde Park with the help of convicted felon Tony Rezko and his wife Rita.
