Seadrift City Council July Meeting
At the July meeting of Seadrift City Council, Police Chief Leonard Bermea reported there were 109 calls for service during the month of June, resulting in 10 Police reports, one being for an unattended death. Eleven arrests were made, including warrants from other jurisdictions. This year the Seadrift Police Department was in charge of security for the Shrimpfest. Chief Bermea reported that all went well, with no fights or traffic accidents, only one arrest for Public Intoxication. A missing juvenile was found and returned to parents.
Mayor DeForest reported six building permits were issued in the month of June, with a taxable evaluation of $46,000.
The Municipal Court closed 36 cases last month and added 10 new cases. Currently there are 42 open cases. The Court has been working on collecting old traffic tickets. In June, $2,482 in fines were added to the City coffers.
Mayor DeForest reported that 67 hours were spent on animal control last month. Eight dogs were impounded, with six being returned to their owners. Owners of two dogs were cited for lack of water and shelter. The situation was rectified. Eleven cats and six wild animals were also impounded.
The Mayor reported that bids will be called for in August or September for the new 100kw wind turbine for the Water Works. This project is funded by a grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture. Council approved a $411.10 change order for the Water/Wastewater Line Replacement and Tank Refurbishment project, with is almost completed. The A.D. Power Bay Front Park pier is nearing completion, and a “No Wake” zone will now be enforced in that area.* Replacing the Bay Ave Bridge, a project that’s been in the works for a long time, is expected to begin in August.
James Dotson of the San Antonio Bay Partnership announced a public meeting at the Seadrift Library on July 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Information will be presented on habitat conservation and public access. You will have opportunity to say where you would like to see more public access to the Bay System. Mr. Dotson also announced that the second annual “San Antonio Bay Day” will be held on September 28 at Seadrift Bayfront Park.
Peggy Gaines of the Seadrift Lions Club announced that an independent web site (Seadrift Community Notices) has been set up on Facebook for Seadrift Community notices.
Nan Burnett, President of the Seadrift Chamber of Commerce, thanked everyone for their help and support during the recent Shrimpfest.
The next meeting of Seadrift City Council will be held Tuesday, August 6, at 7:00 p.m. at Seadrift City Hall. The public is welcome to attend.
