A Library and Learning Center of the Future:

Letter to Full and Part-Time Residents of Port O’Connor

It is not every day that we as a community have an opportunity to support a project that creates pride, value, and sustainability for present and future generations. As an educator, I have seen firsthand the benefits of opening books and opening minds. The library project will allow us to create a partnership for learning, centered on information literacy that is designed around active, authentic student learning. It will also provide a much needed venue where the community can come together.

It is exciting to think of the library filled with children after school hours working with mentors and parents, continuing their learning. I have had the pleasure of meeting many talented community members that are willing to play an active role in this process. I am convinced that the volunteer pool of people willing to work with our children will dramatically increase with the new facility.

Our ability to enhance the quality of life through education initiatives is an honor and a responsibility. I am writing this letter of support for this project and believe it is time for the new library to become a reality. The simple question we should ask ourselves is if not us, who? If not now, when? Our unified support will shape tomorrow, please join me in supporting this new library initiative.

Sincerely,

Tiffany O’Donnell

New Fishing Pier

First off I would like to say how grateful we are to have a new lighted fishing pier here in Seadrift. It is truly amazing. My daughter and I have enjoyed many nights fishing under the lights and I thank you for that quality time.

Second I would like to say to the folks who are using the pier…PICK UP YOUR TRASH!!!! Every time we have gone out there we are finding an absurd amount of trash, beer cans, trashed fishing line, fish guts, broken lures etc left all up and down the pier. Take some pride people…let’s practice what some of us were taught leave it cleaner than how you found it! Stop trashing out our new pier.

Sincerely,

Grateful Mom for fishing pier

Dolphin Refuses to Open a Can of Worms

We recently received a letter from a disgruntled employee of a local business. He was not complaining about his employer, but about the attitude of those who live in proximity of the business for which he works. Then we received a letter from a person who lives near said business stating her complaints against the business.

After reviewing our own Letters Policy, which was established many years ago, it was decided that the letter from the complaining citizen was not in compliance with the Dolphin’s policy. In order not to be seen as taking sides, the editor has decided to omit both letters.

See our Letters Policy below:

The Dolphin welcomes letters from our readers on any subject that is of general interest to our audience. Letters should be 300 words or less (with exceptions at the Dolphin’s discretion). Letters reflect the opinion of the writer, and not that of Dolphin Talk staff, and we retain the right to determine suitability for publication. It is the policy of this newspaper to promote area interests: therefore, complaints against local businesses should be directed elsewhere. Letters must be signed and include day and evening phone numbers, which will not be published. Your name will be withheld upon request, but anonymous material will not be considered for publication.
