Thank You
My family and I would like to thank all of those who contributed to my benefit to help with medical expenses for my anurysum. The words ‘Thank You’ do not express the gratitude for all the hard work and support from such a small community. A special thanks to Sally and Calvin Ragusin for the incredible hard work, family and friends, as well as the POC Baptist Church for coming and dinning in with us! Once again Thanks! God has most certainly blessed me.

A Belated ‘Happy Thanksgiving’

Shame on me for not getting this in early enough to make the paper.

I wish to say to all my friends in POC Happy Thanksgiving. Although I can’t be there in body, I can still be there in spirit.

Don’t forget to be good because old Santa is on his way.

All those who have coffee at the Mini Mart every morning, I miss being there and getting into arguments about politics. It’s all in fun and we can’t be too serious about those things because life will go on no matter what we think. Thank God that we live in a country where we can voice our own opinion.

Why I Am Thankful in 2013
On March 7, 2013 I was chased by three pit bulls on Hwy 87, and had to have therapy for 5 1/2 months.

On September 1, 2013 I was bitten by a five foot rattlesnake and never heard it rattle. Guess I scared it.

My wife Cherre took me right to Memorial Medical Center in Port Lavaca. I saw my life going by me and it reminded me of how short life can be.

My leg swelled three times its size and my foot turned black.

Cherre and I thank the community for all the prayers and get well wishes. This all certainly messed up my golf game and Cherre got tired of being Russell Cain.

Thank you.

Tap Into the Rainy Day Fund
When is Governor Perry going to tap into the rainy day fund and give the Texas Dept of Transportation the money they need to repair the infrastructure in our State?
It is estimated that the fund will have twelve billion in it by the time the next legislative session rolls around.

The Eagle Ford shale produces more product than we have pipe lines to take it to midstream.

The money in the fund comes primarily from oil and gas taxes. Since 1987, 75 cents of every dollar that the State collects is socked away in the rainy day fund.

Since we don’t have enough pipe lines to move these products to market, big trucks are used that are destroying the roads in Lavaca, Dewitt, and Gonzales counties. In the last year there have been many wrecks and deaths on these roadways. I say pull out some money from the fund and build new roads and repair the old ones until enough pipe lines can be put in place to carry the oil and gas to the market.

Thank You
We would like to express our thanks to all those who came and supported us at our time of loss of our loved one, Lee Olivarez. Thank you to everyone who provided donations, food, flowers and time. We greatly appreciate all of your help.

Also, thank you to all of our family and friends for coming and helping us get through this hard time. It means a great deal to us.

Dear Fellow Coastal Bend Citizens,
Port Lavaca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is audited annually by the Texas Department of Disability and Aging Services (TDADS). They are required to perform this audit as part of their agreement with The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to renew the facility’s license, and as a part of the contract between the facility and TDADS. The audit is four days of record review, staff demonstrating proficiency in resident care areas, medication administration, wound care, dietary services, employee hiring, housekeeping and Life Safety code. As they are a skilled nursing facility, the audits are mostly concentrated on the Nursing Department. The Nursing Department is not only audited in the resident care area but nursing administration and nursing documentation.

This past September 2013, TDADS came to perform their annual audit at Port Lavaca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and for the nursing portion and other departments aside from LIfe Safety, they have received no deficiencies. What this means is that according to their contract and the regulations that they are bound to follow, they did not violate any federal or state regulations. This is the first time since the facility started operating that there were no deficiencies cited.

We are very proud that our staff performed their duties with perfection. This is a testament to their nursing department and other departments that their daily efforts were rewarded with this distinctive honor. Although they don’t receive any awards or recognition from TDADS, the honor of caring for our residents is the true reward. It’s not to say that they are perfect, as there is only one perfect person, but they recognize the need for improvement daily and they work toward perfection through training, good attitudes and supporting each other.

Russell Cain
Lifelong resident of Port Lavaca. I am a concerned citizen for improved health care. Way to go, Port Lavaca Nursing!
