Condolences – Lewis Ray Madden

Lewis Ray Madden, lifelong resident of Calhoun County, passed from this life on July 10, 2014. Lewis was born in Port O’Connor, December 27, 1921, to Ray and Dora Madden. Lewis grew up in Port O’Connor and graduated from Port Lavaca High School in 1939. He attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville until World War II. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served until 1946. After his service he returned to Port O’Connor and went in business. He was part owner of Madden Mercantile, South Beach Terrace and Port O’Connor Theatre.

He married Juaniece Marek, January 19, 1951. In 1954, they moved to Seadrift and built the Main Theatre. Later they opened Madden’s Western Auto and True Value Store. They also owned and operated Madden Dry Goods. Lewis served as a director in Seaport Bank and the First National Bank and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Port Lavaca.

In 1987, they sold their businesses and moved to their farm on Hwy. 238. After retiring, they became active in the community, especially with the Calhoun County Senior Citizens. During their retirement they traveled throughout the United States and many foreign countries.

Lewis is survived by his wife; sister, Mary ‘Joey’ Oglesby. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Arthur, Oscar and Richard; sisters, Thelma Zwerschke, Laura Rather and Marjorie Gibson DeLoney.

Funeral Services were held Monday, July 14, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Port Lavaca with Pastor Mark Porterfield officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Gardens.

Pallbearers were his Nephews. Honorary Pallbearers were John Lewis, Harry Moore, Kenneth Marek and Rusty Griffith.
