The very active Bunco group met Monday, October 6, 2014, a change in date as the members of the Neighborhood Watch System were holding their yearly meeting.  No problem with the change in date, however, as these women were gathered together that evening to WIN and enjoy themselves.  Gathering at the early evening hour of 7 p.m., the members of this group were entranced by the delicious appearing foods for all to enjoy.  Hostesses that evening were Mary Ann Claiborne, Diane Cooley and Sally Ragusin and these totally inspired gals pushed Halloween in various foods for all to enjoy.  After nibbling and nibbling, it became time to get down to business, and so play commenced.

Winning most games was Kelly Gee and Annette Leach also walked away with a prize for capturing the most Buncos.  And bringing up the end was Sally Ragusin who was awarded the booby prize.  Hostesses for the next event on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 will be Annette and Kelly.  But don’t forget, girls, that’s Election Day!

Have you noticed that gasoline is now down THAT’S DOWN to $2.99 per gallon?  And that the recent semi-coolish weather could prompt a trip down the open road?  And that maybe, it’s time to check out a favorite recipe for a stew or delicious soup?  Or how about a gumbo?  Which then prompts:

OK, you Cooks in POC!  Past time to get your cooking team together and taste test once again that fabulous chili recipe!  And, you residents with a Cajun back-ground, let’s get going with the best Gumbo you can create!  Saturday, October 25, 2014, for the 6th Annual Chili and Gumbo Cookoff is coming fast and much sooner than you think.  Get your entries into Hoop at Hurricane Junction soonest, so you can be a winning party to this Event!  And, if you don’t plan on cooking; I know, let someone else labor over a hot stove; do plan to attend the Cookoff; you have the opportunity to wander around and trust your nose to find the winning entry And following that, you can place your bid on some superb prizes available in the Silent Auction to follow the judging.  Should be a lot of fun; DON’T MISS IT! Besides, Hoop has designated the Building Fund for our Library to receive the profits.  And this is a “happening” where you can enjoy yourself and help to fund a new Library in our area!

The Grand Slam Tournament in memory of Chris Ragusin was a huge success; and many thank you’s go to the weather (incredible); the entrants (many); and the huge list of volunteers who put this tournament together one more time.  Much money was raised to support the many causes that this group benefits.  And a huge thank you to so many for once again making this event such a success.

And while we’re talking about events: be sure and try to attend the Halloween Carnival at our School.  This is a totally enjoyable happening that all adults will be thankful they were there to watch.  Seeing our children parade in costume is quite something, an occurrence that as a grandparent we may have occasionally missed.  Beginning early in the evening on Saturday, November 1, 2014, and held in the auditorium of the School, the anticipated turnout requires that you arrive on time in order to get a seat.  And don’t forget the Cake Walk in the Cafeteria with delicious cakes provided by the many talented bakers in our community.  Hope to see you there.

And speaking of the bakers and other outstanding cooks of the Service Club, their semi-annual Garage & Bake Sale is scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2014, beginning at 8:00 A.M.  And if you’re looking for something tasty as a dessert for dinner that night, or breakfast in the morning, you’d better plan on arriving early.  And the Garage Sale will have so many items that your eyes get tired looking; if you’re really lucky, you’ll find that special prize.  Many thanks go to many persons who make this sale a success; but there are several whose past and current assistance really need to be acknowledged.  The first is Susie Onishi, a member of the Club, and one who has spent many months sorting and re-boxing the donations for our sale.  And the second would be the members of the Coast Guard who turn out early in the morning to load and then unload the many trucks with box after box of items.  THANKS TO YOU ALL; there are really not enough gold stars in a box to commemorate your endeavors!

Do hope that there was a huge turnout for the Neighborhood Nite Against Crime and that each person had the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with that other person down the street. As each resident’s input is necessary for the protection of all, the ideas and information gained from this turnout can help to prevent any possible problem.

I welcome any comments and ideas and news of what’s happening in our area at any time; please contact me either by email or telephone.  And thank you for your input and the reading of this column.
