Chamber Meeting

On Monday Nov. 10 2014 the Chamber held their monthly meeting. Approximately 50 folks attended to listen and to also have some input as to the location of the pavilion. The meeting was attended by 7 Chamber board members that listened and tried to answer questions as best we could. It was also stressed to the attendees that we are working the best we can on trying to make everyone happy. This is an impossible mission to accomplish and we know that – so we will continue to explore our options and are looking into the best result for the majority.

We ask that as we are working towards a solution that we get as much positive input as we possibly can. We have worked very hard in building a good relationship with the people of Port O’Connor and will continue. We also want to THANK our County Commissioners and Judge for their patience and time that they have allowed for us to work through this process. And I would like to send a HUGE Thank You to all the Directors -past and present- that have made this new pavilion a reality along with all of the donors and workers!

Mary Jo Walker
POC Chamber President 2014

A few personal thoughts on the King Fisher Park Pavilion discussion:

We believe that all homeowners on Park Street understand the need for a new pavilion and support the Chamber in building one. There is no debate concerning the replacement. The debate has always been the location. Residents favor the proposal using the existing location as it will accommodate the larger pavilion, if the basketball area is moved. Financial assistance has become available to the Chamber to completely eliminate this concern for relocating the court.

Building in the existing location preserves the green space in the park used constantly by kite flyers, dog trainers, sunrise watchers and families. In addition, even though the new pavilion will be considerably higher in elevation (roof height), construction in this spot will preserve the panoramic bay view that the entire community has enjoyed over the years.

There is really no way to make an open metal building beautiful. Lets make it functional and build it to minimize the effect it will have on the natural beauty of our bay.

The Chamber of Commerce and many other local volunteers have worked hard raising money to make this project a reality, Thank You. Lets move forward together with a solution that works for everyone.

Yes, the 2014 POC CCA Banquet was a shining success!

The 15th Annual Coastal Conservation Association Banquet, held October 18, 2014, at the Community Center, was the most successful of all banquets held to date. The food was good, the prizes were attractive and useful, and the members and guests left happy.

The membership is now looking forward to a dinner meeting, yet unscheduled, to review the final numbers and celebrate the results of their hard work. The membership, both the newer members and the older ones, gave freely of their time during the three month period leading up to the banquet and worked tirelessly and without reservation during the week before the banquet. They are to be congratulated and appreciated.

Both our donors, made of POC residents, non-residents, friends, and business owners, cash contributions and others, are the ones that really made the difference and helped us go over the top. Thanks to you, one and all. Now, what can we do to make it even better next year!

Jim Busby and Carl Ray
Banquet Co-Chairs

Calhoun County Goes Republican

I have been a Texas Realtor for 42 years and the Calhoun County Republican Chair for 6 years (since 2008). I have attended many State Conventions. I was a Delegate to the National Convention in 2012 for Romney.

The County has been a Democratic stronghold for 50 years. This November the County carried 19 precincts for the Republicans out of 25, and we elected 3 of our 4 Candidates.

Texas Politcal Action Committee (TPREPAC), the largest lobbyist group in Texas, lobbying for realtors and the consumers, gave money to all our candidates. I have been personally involved in TREPAC since the early 1970’s and was the local Board Chairman for 12-14 years. Paul McGee is our current Chairman and is doing a very good job.

Nancy Pomykal (Port O’Connor JP) is our longest running Republican at 24 years and is in her 7th term. Anna Goodman was elected as County Clerk, and Wesley Hunt was elected JP in Seadrift.

As a Realtor I was elected Volunteer of the Year 2013-2014, covering 17 counties, State District 18 Glen Hagar’s District. But I give a lot of credit to Connie and Ed Hunt who are a big part of the Republican effort, and I look forward to serving with them again.

Look for Calhoun County to go totally Republican in 2016!

Thank You, Voters

I want to take a few moments to THANK the voters of Precinct 5 and Port O’Connor for allowing me to serve as your Justice of the Peace for the past 24 years. I appreciate your support and confidence by reelecting me to my 7th term of office. I feel I have accomplished several goals during my tenure. I have striven to be a true PUBLIC SERVANT, and to be fair and judge each case before this Court fairly and with integrity.

Our community and the judiciary have seen a lot of changes during the past 24 years. It has not been easy, but it has had its rewards. From the beginning, I promised to take the job seriously and try to make a difference in my community. I feel I have done so. I am looking forward to the next 4 years.

Thank you, voters, and non- voters as well. I sincerely appreciate being your Justice of the Peace. I will continue to serve until the time comes I must step aside. When that day arrives, I hope my replacement will have the desire to serve this community to the best of his or her ability and from the heart. God Bless you all.

The November Elections

First off let me say to all the people that voted for me in the November elections, thank you for choosing me to represent you as a director of our Improvement District. I will do my best to prove you made the right choice. Also let me say it is an honor work for such a great group of people.

Now to the people who were not able to vote in the local elections, I will be working on that problem very shortly and I will keep you informed of my progress. It is going to take some time to remedy this problem, but no matter it needs to be addressed.

Next, to the people that didn’t vote for me let me say, Thank You also. At least you got out and voted and exercised your right to vote, this right has been granted to us by our forefathers who fought and died so we could have this right, and we honor them by doing so.

I will be working for all the residents of Port O’Connor no matter how you may have voted.

Maybe as time moves on and I am given a chance to prove myself I will be able to gain your support and trust in the future.

I want to wish everyone a great Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
