“The Seven Year Itch”

It is still cold today (April 10, 2016). The winter has not been cold enough for a “hog butchering” winter though.  A friend and I are old enough to remember the “cold hog butchering days” of winter.

This friend called me on the phone and told me she broke out in an itchy rash. She went to the doctor. He wrote her out a prescription. She took her prescription to the pharmacy to get it filled. She went to the store to buy a few groceries and then went to get her medicine. The pharmacy said, “I am sorry, Medicare won’t pay for this medication.” She said, “OK, I’ll pay for it myself. How much is it?”

The pharmacist said, “It is three hundred dollars.”

My friend said, “I won’t pay for it. Keep it.” She went looking for some sulphur on the shelf. She could not find any sulphur. She told me her mom put sulphur and “hog lard” on the kids when they were young and got the Seven Year Itch.

By the way, what has happened to Seven Year Itch? Gone – just like hog butchering days.

Letter to the Editor

Several weeks ago, my husband, who had been recuperating from a severe bronchial ailment, fell when leaving his truck. My blessed neighbor, Michelle, saw Henry lying on the ground and unable to right himself. As she couldn’t lift him, she went immediately into the street and instantly waved down a passing vehicle, “Servepro” with two extremely helpful gentlemen, Aron and Seth, who were able to get Henry upright and into our home.

Additionally, she called EMS as captained by Nathan O’Neill who came and checked Henry’s wounds.

I’ve said in the past that our community is full of caring and neighborly residents; Henry and I can only emphatically aver that point.

April 26th Franklin Graham Prayer Rally in Austin

Franklin Graham Prayer Rally

I can’t tell you how excited I was to be a part of a huge gathering of Christians on April 26th at our State Capitol, praying for our leaders, our families, and us! This gathering was hosted by Franklin Graham, the son of renowned evangelist Billy Graham. Franklin has been traveling to our nation’s capitols calling Christians to pray and get involved in the political process by voting and running for office. By the end of this year Franklin will have visited all 51 of our capitols, making a big difference in many people’s lives, including my own!

Iguanafest, Huge Success

Iguanafest is a huge success thanks to Justin Karl (owner of the Green Iguana), the Port Lavaca City Council, City Manager Bob Turner, City Treasurer Scotty Jones and Economic Development Director Chad Odom.

Thank you for all of your efforts to promote Calhoun County and the Port Lavaca Downtown Main Street area. It takes a lot of effort and planning, and the success of the event showed all of that. Port Lavaca was beaming with pride.

The vendors, PL Police Department, County law enforcement officers were all on hand to make certain everything went well. It was certainly a family event. The ‘80s costume contest, the jalapeno and hot dog eating contests, and the lizard line dance provided great entertainment, along with a string of bands performing over the two-day festival. Vendors served a tremendous variety of eats and other goodies of all kinds. Thank you for coming.

Thank you Justin for starting this event 10 years ago. We are glad it is back. Texas Highways was here over the weekend promoting tourism for all of Texas. Good job, Port Lavaca and Calhoun County. Way to go.
