As soon as we can get a decent cool front to move through all sorts of good things will fall into place. Aside from setting up some excellent fishing for reds, trout and flounder, we’ve got the South Zone dove season opener on Sept. 23. If you’re not into dove hunting, check out the jetties for bull reds, and the surf for trout.

The surf is at the top of my list for September fishing fun. Under a north breeze the surf will go flat and turn trout green. There are miles of surf to fish out of Port O’Connor. But only the “hot” spots will be holding big surf run trout. Best live baits will be croakers and shrimp. But finger mullet will also work.

The other rod bending players in the surf include reds, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, tarpon, jacks and of course sharks.

If you want to have big fish fun rig up to bump troll ribbon fish in the surf, at the jetties and offshore. Right now there is no shortage of kings with most weighing 15 to 25 pounds. They will also hit topwater shallow running lures like a Bomber Wind Cheater or Bomber Super Pogy all day long. Don’t forget to rig up with a wire leader. Also, a Super Spook in chrome or chrome/blue will get blasted by kings as well.

At the jetties look for bull reds in the 15 to 30 pound class to be feeding along the jetties, in the surf and at nearby offshore rigs. Best baits are Spanish sardines or fresh cut mullet fished on bottom.

Live shrimp fished deep along the rocks will catch anything from a big trout and a reel-burning king
.

Just recently I put a party of three on 15 trout, 6 kings, black drum, sheepshead and a load of mangrove snapper while fishing the jetties.
Want to catch a tarpon? Then you might rig up with a live croaker and bump troll them along bottom at the mouth of the jetties or pass.

Some of the best flats fishing of the year is happening on Pringle and Contee lakes. That’s where you can find reds in the 15 to 25 inch class. Fish jigs under rattle floats for the best results. Live shrimp are good, so are croakers.

If you are dead set on catching a box of tasty fish your absolute best bet is to hire me, Capt. Robert Sloan for a day of fishing and fun. Give me a call at 409-782-6796, or go to my web site at www.luckystrikeguide.com to get in on the action.
