Port O’Connor was full of folks and fun for the Memorial Day Weekend. I think this year was one of the best turnouts for the Annual Chamber of Commerce Kite Flying Contest. Judging a Kite Contest is difficult when everyone that comes out has a great kite to show or a kite that keeps flying higher and higher.
This year also had a very diverse group of flyers. Doug Smith and his friend Craig Hampton came out and demonstrated their fantastic, colorful and amazing kites. He is always a joy and is really great with the youth that come out and express interest in how to keep ‘em flying.

Participants came from many Texas cities, as well as from right here in Port O’Connor. Trophies were given for prettiest, best flying, largest, smallest and for just coming out and trying to fly their kite. If you have flown a kite before you know that sometimes, even when the wind is perfect, as it was on Saturday, it can be a difficult task. Lots of trophies were given out for First and Second Place in several different divisions and medals and kites for the others. Special Thanks to the Chamber for sponsoring this event. Kudos to Shirley’s Small Frys for providing the cold water.

Special thanks to Shirley and James Harper, who, with my assistance, put things together and made sure all that attended got a prize of some sort.

This year we decided to give out medals as well as the trophies and the response was well received. Special thanks to Veronica and Billy for donating these medals.
We so enjoyed watching their efforts and enthusiasm of this group. That is what makes this event so great. So, see you next year. Have a great summer.
