In an effort to expedite the funding process for much needed repairs, Seadrift City Council voted to hire Grant Works as administrative contractor for handling and funding of all projects. The City has been struggling since the hurricane to secure assistance with the $8 to $10 million in damages sustained. There are 14 projects needing reimbursement and/or funding ranging from City wide debris removal to rebuilding of lift stations.
Council voted to take action on one hazardous condition: fencing sections of the seawall to block access to the damaged, instable areas. Estimates will be taken for buying or building a temporary 6’ high chain link fence for these areas.
Noting that several carports had blown down during the hurricane, Council voted to make more stringent requirements for the anchoring of such carports. An anchoring diagram was submitted by Mr. Roy Norman of Victoria and was approved by the Council. Copies of the anchoring requirement can be acquired from the City or your local carport dealer. Carports built before the hurricane are not required to comply, although it is encouraged for safety reasons.
Council voted to appropriate $7,000 (the same amount as last year) from the Hotel/Motel Tax to Seadrift Chamber of Commerce for the funding of advertising for the upcoming Shrimpfest.
The May 5, 2018 General Election for Council positions has been cancelled due to a lack of challengers.
Mr. Robert Loflin, Chairman of the Calhoun County Historical Commission made a formal presentation to the City of the locomotive silhouette adjacent to the Depot building. He distributed photos and information about the train and depot to all in attendance.
Seadrift City Council meets the first Tuesday of each month, 7:00 p.m., at Seadrift City Hall. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
