Ahhhh! The warm, windy season of Summer on the coast is just around the corner! Although we all love the sunny, breezy days, we will be looking for shady places where we can escape the heat and burn from over exposure.

Awnings on our RV’s are a great addition to provide shade from too much sun!

Awnings, by definition: A roof like cover extending over a window, door or deck to provide shelter from the sun or rain.! Note, it Does Not include Wind in this definition!

Wind is definitely high on the “enemy” list for awnings! Rain is actually a bit of a stretch, as gusting winds often accompany the rain!

“Do’s and Don’ts” for Awning use and care:

Never, Never leave your RV with an awning extended!
If you make a dash to the market, retract it!
If you go to the neighbors for a cook out, retract it!
If you are heading to bed, retract it!

Take that 2-3 minutes and retract it Every Time. We are on the coast, thunderstorms and wind speeds can pop up in a matter of minutes and by the time it wakes you up, your awning may be on top of your RV, ripped down or draped over your neighbors RV. It only takes a a 10-12 mph wind a few seconds to totally destroy an awning! Those few minutes you take to protect your awning can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars to replace it, depending on the type of awning you have. When you extend your awning, let one outside corner droop slightly. If you should get caught in a rain shower, this canted corner will allow water to run off and not collapse the supports or rip the awning cover. Some awnings cannot be canted, making it more important to retract them quickly if wind or rainstorm approaches.

There are all manner of tie downs, straps, stakes and de-flapper clamps on the market. These items may help to stabilize and reduce awning noise. They will not protect it from gusty high winds.

Tie downs should Not Be Used on electric or scissor frame supported awnings!

Care of your awning will extend it’s life. Keep moving parts clean and lubricated. Check awning supports for any bends or cracks. Make sure it is secured correctly before travel. Keep it clean by washing it with a soft brush and a low suds cleaner designed for the awning fabric. Rinse it thoroughly. Check the labels when shopping for a cleaner!! Some, not all cleaners have a UV protective additive to help prevent sun damage. Allow it to dry before retracting for storage.
