The Port O’Connor Service Club has purchased a new commercial grade volleyball net for King Fisher Park. Thanks goes out to them. As time goes by, things need replaced and upgraded. Most Sunday afternoons you will see a group at the park playing a game of volleyball. -LaJune Pitonyak

Despite all this heat and humidity, Service Club members are still hard at work finalizing current projects and making preparations for some of our upcoming annual events.

Last month we reported we were working with Calhoun County on front beach improvement projects. The new volleyball net has been set up. Service Club has made a donation to Calhoun County which the County has accepted and which will be used to replace 11 picnic tables at our front beach. Service Club members have noted the poor condition of the flag and flagpole, and these are being replaced shortly with funds provided by the Service Club.

Service Club college scholarships for this year have been awarded, and this year’s recipients are Marshall and Mitchell Arlitt. Congratulations to these young POC students! If you have a student who attended POC Elementary school and Calhoun County High School, they are eligible to apply for a Service Club scholarship. Applicants should contact their high school guidance counselor for more details and deadlines for next year’s scholarships. Scholarship funds, once awarded, are sent directly to the student’s college registrar for application to their tuition costs.
