April Price, Port O’Connor School’s Teacher of the Year
After volunteering at Port O’Connor School and with other children’s groups in the community, April took Mrs. Judy Anderson’s advice to, “get back to college and get into a classroom with students where you belong”. April took her advice and has been a full-time classroom teacher for the past two years. She teaches 5th and 6th grade math and science.
April says her favorite parts of being a teacher are watching students find their confidence in their learning and becoming leaders and the relationships she builds with her students. “Being on a small campus helps form those solid relationships,” April said. “I hope to teach my students in a way that they become confident, independent learners who will be respectful, responsible, and have pride in all they do.”
Dustin Hahn, Seadrift School’s Teacher of the Year
Dustin has been teaching for 10 years, the last seven at Seadrift School. Graduating from the University of Houston, Victoria, he was focused on being a coach/teacher. He loves volleyball and coaching, but since coming to Seadrift he has strictly focused on becoming a better teacher.
Dustin says his favorite part of being a teacher is witnessing students growing because he taught them. “I hope to show students that there is a healthy balance between a time to work and a time to play.” he said.
“I have learned perseverance from my students. Many of my students go through tremendous loss of family members at such an early age, but they pick their heads up and keep coming to school to learn.”
