Hooked on Books Discussion Group

The Hooked on Books club continues to enjoy reviewing interesting books of many kinds. In September, the discussion centered around a miraculous escape from the burning Twin Towers: Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero by Michael Hingston with Susy Flory.

Michael, who is blind, faced almost certain death that day. His calm demeanor, life-long experience as a blind person, and relationship with his trusted service dog Roselle saved many lives on 9/11. Their remarkable journey in the stairwell of the tower inspired others to rely on Roselle as well, not panic, and survive the horrific event. His life is indeed a testimony to the power of trust, perseverance and the amazing bond between humans and animals.

Hostesses Nancy Ladshaw, Darla Miles, Judy Overton, and Sherri Judice served a delicious lunch, including banana splits!

At the October meeting, participants took a trip back in time with the novel The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. The story chronicles 50 years in the life of a devoted brother and sister as they move from wealth to poverty after their father’s untimely death.

Hostesses Gladys Smedley, Mary Hirschhauser, Mary Ann Claiborne, and Donna Trubee served a lunch consisting of foods mentioned in the book. After the discussion, the ladies toured hostess Gladys Smedley’s pottery studio.

The Book Club’s next meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 14th, at 2:00 p.m. The next reading is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. If you would like to join “Hooked On Books”, please email your contact information to alanehaardt@yahoo.com. All are welcome!
