Mary Covarrubias, age 78, passed away in Port O’Connor on October 6, 2024. Mary, the eldest of nine children, was born on October 15, 1945, in Port O’Connor Texas to the late Petronilo Garza and Rufina Cantu.

She married Adolfo Covarrubias on December 28, 1967 and they remained married until her passing. Through her marriage to Adolfo she had two children, Monica and Adolfo II.

Mary attended college at Soutwest Texas University where she studied Administration. This was her calling and a true gift from God. She began her career as an administrative assistant for Whites Insurance. When Monica was in kindergarten, Mary began her career with Calhoun County ISD as an elementary secretary and devoted her time and energy to the school and children until her retirement.

Her true joy came from serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through service and attendance at the First Baptist Church POC. In her spare time she loved spending time at the library, attending Senior Luncheons and Bible study.
She is survived by her beloved spouse Adolfo David Covarrubias, her daughter Monica Covarrubias and her son Adolfo D. Covarrubias (Angela). She is survived by siblings Alice Garza (Mahandran Rajasuriar), Rose Garza (Felix), Diane Davis (Jesse), Elizabeth Williams (Greg), Esther McDonnough (Kerry), Pete Garza (Maria), and Gilbert Garza (Janice).

Mary is also survived by 6 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild Celina.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents Petronilo and Rufina Garza, and her sister Matilda Shellnut.

Funeral Service was held at Port O’Connor’s First Baptist on October 12, 2024. Burial followed at Port O’Connor

Serving as Pallbearers were Rene Garza, Adolfo Covarrubias III, Petronilo Garza, Gilbert Garza Jr., Corey McDonnough, and Cody McDonnough. Honorary Pallbearers were Adolfo D. Covarrubias and Carlos Garcia.
