Friends of the Port O’Connor Library Student Advisory Board members have been busy lately! This group accomplished a lot in 2015, and members look forward to working together in 2016!

In November, these students met at Port O’Connor Branch Library, welcoming new members to the group. First, they discussed ideas for summer reading program prizes for 2016 (There will surely be some lucky young readers this summer!). After that, the group shared ideas for winter library programs. Friends of PO’C Library looks forward to hosting Saturday “Movie Mornings” in January and February (titles and dates to be announced soon!). Other activity suggestions included arts and crafts; board, card, and tablet games; puzzle and book exchanges; a book drive; and story time. Keep an eye out for details about upcoming events at the local library!

Last month, students also went shopping for new books! PO’C Elementary students visited the school book fair, and each picked out a new book to donate to the Port O’Connor Branch Library. Middle school members were intrigued by several book series and decided on a Kiera Cass set. High school sophomore Parker Luna selected a title he had enjoyed reading, and Jaylin Ramirez, also a sophomore, chose a book by a favorite author. All of the students’ selections were purchased by Friends of PO’C Library.

On December 2, the Student Advisory Board met at the library for a holiday celebration of giving and fellowship. Students each presented their book selections to Calhoun County Library Director Noemi Cruz and Port O’Connor Branch Librarian Shirley Gordon. After taking a group picture, students were surprised and excited to receive gifts themselves!

Students showed each other their presents and discussed reading the new books that had been donated and received as gifts. While everyone enjoyed pizza, cookies, and drinks provided by Friends of PO’C Library board members, the group wrote titles of their favorite books on red and green strips of paper and combined them to make a festive paper chain for a decoration in the library.

Take a look at their suggestions on your next visit to the Children’s area! While you’re there, you may want to check out one of their new additions to the shelves! Be on the look out for library program details in early 2016!
