The Friends of the Port O’ Connor Library hosted an interesting and informative program titled “The Magic Of Chester Island” at the POC Library on October 4, 2021.
Presenters were Audubon Texas Wardens, Tim and Peggy Wilkinson. Peggy is the granddaughter of Chester Smith, a longtime resident of POC, and a dedicated Conservationist, and Warden of the dredge island in Matagorda Bay, commonly known as Bird Island.
To honor Chester Smith, the island has been officially named “Chester Island” to honor him. Chester Smith’s tireless dedication, and many years of hard work, helped preserve the island’s integrity, and, thus, protect the many species of birds and other wildlife that have inhabited the island for decades.
Also present at the program were Chester Smith’s granddaughter, Victoria Behrens, her husband, Mark Behrens, and her children (Chester Smith’s great-grandchildren) Lane and Kynlee Behrens. All who attended enjoyed the presentation immensely!!
