On Saturday, September 17, 2022, 15 volunteers came down to King Fisher Beach in Port O’Connor to participate in the fall Adopt-a-Brach cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon. Four children & ten adults collected 12 bags worth of trash, estimated at about 85 pounds, including some heavy metal wire and pipes.
Items of concern include an 8-Volt battery, hundreds of cigarette butts and plastic bottle caps, and many candy wrappers.
Thankfully, members of our community help to keep the beach clean throughout the year. I am especially thankful for those who provide the buckets near the pier and the beach goers who clean their areas before they leave. Of course, we are always appreciative of the county employees who do a great job!
If you are interested, we also have a spring Adopt-a-Beach cleanup in mid-April. Other Calhoun County locations include Boggy Nature Park and Magnolia Beach. Or, if you clean up beaches/waterways on your own time, you can report your data on the Clean Swell app.
San Antonio Bay Partnership is hosting local cleanups by kayak on September 27 and Oct. 1.
