Johnny Rhyne lost all fish in his Port O’Connor pond due to lack of oxygen caused by our hot, dry weather.

Johnny has been enjoying feeding and watching these fish for several years.

Included in the loss were bass, perch, mullet, crab, a large triploid and many catfish, some weighing as much as 60 pounds.

My uncle lost a lot of large catfish at about the same time that the picture was taken. Did this immediately follow the landfall of hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. General rule for ponds is 100 Lbs. of fish per surface area. Over that the nitrates from fish manure can get to toxic levels, heat increases toxic levels. Need to impose culling. Some of these could be considered pets, could be a hard thing to do, but necessary. Did any large fish survive?

I’m sorry I don’t remember when that was. Thanks for the info about the fish density. No large fish survived.
