Guess we’re about done for fishing tournaments this year, which is really unfortunate, as I understand that fishing really starts to take off in the latter part of the year. And speaking of later months, the unexpected bit of coolness earlier last week gave everyone hopes for a true Autumn. But, guess not, as the temperatures again moved into the 80’s later in the week. Oh, well, maybe that will take care of any lingering mosquitoes.

If you have not entered the 3rd Annual Chili & Gumbo Cookoff at Hurricane Junction on Saturday, October 29th, you still have time. Contact Hoop at 983-4249 for further information. And if you’re not cooking, do plan to come and sample the chili and gumbo of these outstanding cooks; my mouth is watering already!

One of my very favorite events each year is the Halloween Carnival as staged by and for the Elementary School. This year it will be Saturday, October 29th and judging for the costumes will begin at 4:00 p.m. If you’ve never seen the Parade of costumed entrants, you’ve really missed something special as you will see both exuberance and reluctance on the face of each kid. I’m privileged this year to once again act as a Judge, which will become extremely difficult to select a winner.

The Service Club and its POC History Book Committee are still searching for a picture of the ranch house on the LaSalle Ranch preferably back in the 40’s. If anyone has a photo in their possession and will lend it to be copied, please contact either Sue Kubecka, 798-0560 or Janet Johnson, 983-4733.

Have you seen the extensive remodeling to the home on Maple Street? When it started, it seemed as tho it would only be a small addition; now it looks as though the home will be almost doubled in size.

The next meeting of the Sports Association will be Monday, January 16, 2012, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Back Meeting Room of the Community Center. As we are now approaching the Holiday Season in a very rapid manner, this organization decided to suspend meetings until January. Contact either Sylvia Rodriguez, President, 655-3521 or Calvin Ragusin, Vice President, 655-0498 for further information. Membership in this organization is $10.00 per year, and its goals are extremely worthwhile for the benefit of both youngsters and adults of our community.

The next Bunco Party will be Tuesday evening, November 1st at 7:00 p.m. in the back room of the Community Center. Call Shirley Gordon at the Library for further information, 983-4365. This is an amazing group of fascinating women that play Bunco each month; ages ranging from 20’s to +++! We all have a great deal of fun while checking with everyone to learn of the latest trip, story or event in their lives. Our hostesses will be Debbie Michalek and Melissa Satterfield; as this is a Mother-Daughter combination, it should be a Fun evening.

The members of the Service Club want to thank everyone who shopped at their Fall Garage Sale on Saturday, the 15th of October. And if you didn’t find that special item you were seeking, don’t forget, the next one will be in April! But hope you were lucky enough to buy that special dessert from the Bake Sale as the Club members are famous for their outstanding talents in the kitchen!

Guess it’s my turn now to get somewhat philosophical (hope I spelled it correctly, but am sure that Joyce will fix it!) about the very uniqueness of our Community. That is a word that I hesitate to use as it can be extremely overplayed. But where can you take an early morning walk, with or without your dog, and marvel at the yellow streaks of light prior to the sunrise that sends its rays dancing on the water; see the lone pelican or sometimes blue heron standing guard by a moored boat; hear the snuffles of a dolphin in the Intercoastal; smile with joy from the wave of a passing driver yet wonder at the identity; see someone in a store who smiles and asks how you’re doing; you may not recognize the face or remember the name, but this is not a stranger. All of these components make Port O’Connor the very special Community it is. Unfortunately, change will come as it always does, but let’s hope it’s not too radical, or too soon.
