The Museum of the Coastal Bend is hosting an Archaeology Fair on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 22 – 24 at its location on campus at Victoria College. The fair will give local residents the opportunity to explore the history and heritage of the Coastal Bend region, and Victoria County in particular. Attendees will also enjoy lectures about prehistoric and historic cultures, artifact identification, exhibit and site tours, presentations and social activities.
Experts will be on hand to identify Indian points and answer questions about how archeologists identified Buckeye Knoll as one of the three earliest cemeteries in the U.S., dating back to 7,000 years ago. There will also be experts who can answer questions about landowner rights regarding relics of the past found on private property.
The archeology fair is offered at MCB in conjunction with Nueva España, an exhibition of Spanish Colonial artifacts dating from the period of 1721 – 1820. Included in the exhibit is a never-before-seen private collection of artifacts on loan from James Woodrick, a collector and past Victoria resident. Additionally, the fair is offered in conjunction with the museum’s permanent exhibit, Early Peoples of the Texas Coastal Bend, featuring archeological artifacts from prehistoric cultures of the region.
To register for any or all of the activities, call 361.582.2511 or visit the museum’s website at www.MuseumoftheCoastalBend.org. Most activities are offered free of charge but advance registration is encouraged.
