Port O’Connor Fishing Report by Capt. Bob Hill

To sum it up, its been windy, very windy. We’ve had a few frontal passages with 25 knot North wind and then 25 knot Southerly wind between the fronts. It has been pretty uncomfortable fishing but the catching hasn’t been too bad. Its just a matter of finding a place to hide.

The bays are holding great numbers of glass minnows and mullet and the trout are showing up in mass to take advantage of them. Soft plastics and live shrimp have been responsible for some nice boxes of trout. Reds in the bays have been fair along the shorelines. Topwaters have been a bit difficult to work consistently due to the wind.

I’ve fished the lakes a few times over the last 2 weeks but haven’t had much luck, a red here and a drum there has been the standard lately. I’ve tried soft plastics and live shrimp with pretty spotty results. Drifting has been a little tough due to the wind; did I mention it has been windy?

Getting across the big bay to the jetties has been a rough, wet proposition on many days. Once you get there you just have to find a protected spot. The sheepshead have been there but the real big ones haven’t been showing up. Slot Reds are pretty good. Some trout are in the mix and most of them are big, 22+ inches. Sharks have been around as well lately. We have also caught Pompano, Spanish Mackerel and grouper.

In the photo above, Elias Gonzales and Lauren Deshong of San Antonio caught a bunch of really nice fish on their first saltwater fishing trip.
