Lions Club President Joyce Jordan presented a certificate of appreciation to KAVU Meteorologist Bill Alexander at the Lions August 8th meeting.

The Port O’Connor Lions Club was honored to host speaker, Chief Meteorologist, Bill Alexander of KAVU Television Channel 25 in Victoria at the August 8th meeting. Mr. Alexander spoke regarding Hurricanes and Hurricane Preparedness. The community was invited to attend. The consensus of those in attendance was overwhelmingly – that Bill Alexander was very informative and interesting in the knowledge he shared with everyone. He has a vast knowledge of the history of hurricanes and the destruction that incurs including the devastation of storm surges and accompanying tornadoes. He presented everyone with a Hurricane Tracking Guide which included important safety tips, disaster supply kit list, evacuation routes, disaster plan information, important phone number list along with terms we should know and including the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale which sets the category of storms and winds. An informative question and answer session followed and enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you, Mr. Alexander for a job well done! We will be watching your future forecasts with interest.

Joyce Jordan, President of the Port O’Connor Lions Club, presented Bill Alexander with a Lions Club Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Club. We truly appreciate Mr. Alexander for coming to Port O’Connor and enlightening us with his knowledge.

Additional Lions Club Certificates were presented by Joyce Jordan to past officers, directors, and committee chairmen for their service – essentially from inception of the Club to Charter on February 20th, 2010 to May 30th, 2012 which encompasses a little over two regular terms. Officers receiving Certificates were Leah Griffin, Past President; Carol Haverfield and Linda Butler, Past Treasurers (of which Linda graciously accepted the position of Treasurer for the current term), and Janet Johnson, Past Secretary. Although Janet was not present at the meeting, she will be receiving her Certificate of Service as an Officer.

Director Pat Turk was presented a Lions Club Certificate of Service for the period of inception to Charter February 20th, 2010 to May 31st, 2012. Director Kenneth Clark was not in attendance and will be receiving his Certificate for the same term. They have both agreed to continue their positions for the present term.

Lions Club Certificates for Service were presented to Dell Weathersby and Jim Butler for Past Tail Twisters. The Tail Twister keeps everyone on their toes and can assess small fines to make the meetings more fun – like calling out those who forgot to wear their pins to the meeting.

A Certificate of Service for Membership Chairman was announced and will be presented to Lydia Strakos. Jim Butler will be presented a Certificate of Service as Fundraising Chairman at the next meeting as his actual certificate somehow regrettably became entangled with certificates announced for whom the recipients were not present. What is that saying about the best laid plans …….? Sorry, Jim.

At any rate, the Port O’Connor Lions Club does appreciate the excellent service these individuals have given along with all the other hardworking members who have graciously given their time and talents without a specific title. THANK YOU!!
