Agenda for the October 4, 2012 meeting of the Service Club centered around several upcoming events, and the first being the Fall Garage Sale as scheduled for Saturday, November 3, 2012. The Sale will begin again at 8:00 a.m. and continue until the last item on the tables is gone. The hardworking Chairman of the Sale is Lydia Strakos, and she is stressing to the community at large that although we have been accepting various donations for the Sale during the past several months, we are continuing to need them. Many items can be donated such as outgrown children’s clothes; women’s as well as mens clothing; that purse that you no longer need or a necklace that just doesn’t fit. We are also looking for kitchen items of dishes, glasses, pots and pans, and special baking dishes also those superb decorative bits of this and that which no longer suit your mood or decor. Tools as well as fishing gear are very welcome as are various pieces of furniture. Please contact Lydia at 983-2003 or 983-2341; her Assistant, Debbie Busby 512 914-9521 or our President, Janet Johnson 983-4733 to arrange for storage of these castoff or no longer necessary items.
Members have also been alerted that following the meeting on Thursday, the morning and early afternoon hours will be dedicated to setting up the tables and sorting items on the tables.
An announcement was made that our resident, Juan DeLeon had succumbed to cancer and a memorial donation was then made in his name to the Fire Department. Additionally, a memorial service has been planned for Wednesday, October 10th at the Community Center from 6-8 p.m.
Additionally, the membership voted to make a substantial donation to our local EMS to help purchase a defibrillator to be kept in a central location here in Port O’Connor. Another money donation was then made to the POC Sports Association for financing a portion of the work in Phase I.
Although Christmas will not arrive for several months, that does not mean that the members of this organization are lacking in thought or planning for that season. Chairmen Pat Ekstrom and Pat Turk of the annual Christmas Luncheon for our senior residents, announced that the entrees for the Luncheon will once again be baked ham accompanied by beef brisket. The members will be providing the various items of mashed and sweet potatoes, vegetables, salad, cranberries and desserts of all kinds. As, luckily, our membership keeps growing and many of our members are from dissimilar backgrounds, those special dishes will create an unbelievable choice for our guests. Do plan to mark Friday, December 7, 2012, on your calendar for attending the annual Senior Citizen Christmas Luncheon as prepared by the members of the Port O’Connor Service Club. You won’t be disappointed by the huge array of excellent foods!
And along with the Christmas Luncheon, it had been announced at a previous meeting that Chairmen Joyce Jordan and Sue Kubecka of the Decorating Committee have planned to create an old fashioned Christmasy atmosphere in the Center’s Main Hall. Table decorations will be the many Santas and Angels and Snowmen from years past along with greenery, red greenery and possibly some hurricane lanterns will be used to enhance the theme. And the date of our Trim the Tree Party has been changed from the Monday following Thanksgiving (the 26th) to Monday, the 3rd of December, commencing at 9:30 a.m.
And, finally, the Historical Book Committee will be meeting on a new date with the appearance of a charming guest who will be able to detail life in the past in Port O’Connor.
Our next meeting is set for Thursday morning, October 18, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Community Center. If any woman in this area wishes to become a part of this organization, please contact either President, Janet Johnson at 983-4733 or Membership Chairman, Shirley Gordon, 983-4365 for further information.
