Luke 2:1-21: “In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”

Seadrift has been very fortunate to have had several Santas over the years…Judge Simmons, Allen Braun, Joe and Mary Beaver as Santa and Mrs. Claus, George Carter and his merry elves, Kenneth Reese, and the list may go on! Our hats off to all that donned a Santa suit to bring Christmas cheer to all, especially the children.

Did you know?

The real Santa Claus was known as Saint Nicholas who was born around A.D. 280 in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all his inherited wealth and traveled to the countryside helping the poor and sick.

Kenneth Reese has this to say about his experience as Santa: “I first started my Santa show for kids in 2001 after watching kids standing in line to visit a mall Santa. It was disheartening for me to see the mall Santa just rushing the kiddos through the experience, not really interacting with them, really just concerned about getting that picture taken so the photographer could dun the parents for a $10 picture, I thought I could do better. So, I bought me a J.C. Penney Santa suit and set up a Santa desk in my front yard, put a sign out at the street announcing that Santa would be there…and the kids came. I did my Dancin’ Santa show in my Brentwood neighborhood for 11 wonderful, fun filled years and literally interacted with hundreds of kiddos during those times.

In March of 2012, I retired from my job and my wife and I moved from Victoria to our home in Seadrift. I learned that Seadrift’s lawn mower Santa would no longer be making the little kiddos in Seadrift smile, so I stepped up to the job. I am now in my 11th year as Seadrift’s Bayfront Santa. I am happy to say that my 11 years of being Seadrift Santa has been every bit as rewarding as my first 11 years in Brentwood, but my Seadrift years have been a little more heartwarming. In Seadrift I get to visit with the grandkids and great grandkids of old dear friends…and it’s so cool!”

November 13th at the Seadrift School gym was just that… honoring our heroes! Many people came to experience a very special program put on by the Seadrift School to honor our veterans. Many an area veteran was recognized as well as the different branches of service in the presentation of the military flags. Patriotic songs were performed by the students. There was the POW and MIA table to help us remember that they are not forgotten. Pledges to our flags were given. A Veterans Prayer Poem was read. A speech was given by the Assistant School Principal Fjola Reger. The program was enjoyed by veterans and community alike.

For over 23 years the Seadrift School has been honoring our area veterans. Any time a veteran is honored any or all their families are honored as well.

We salute the Seadrift School staff and students who worked to make these programs possible.
