Edith Madden 96 of Seadrift, Texas was welcomed into heaven on June 7, 2014. She was born July 18, 1917 in Clinton, Missouri to the late Richard and Carrie See. Edith worked side by side with her husband, shrimping and sewing shrimp nets for the local fisherman. After working all day she would sew her children’s clothes at night and later she did the same for her grandchildren. She loved to knit,tat and crochet and made lots and lots of afghans, children’s blankets and baby booties. Edith was the foundation of her family. She was loving, sweet and kind to everyone . She could make you feel calm and loved no matter what the world was dealing out at the time. No matter how big her family got, she always had time for everyone. Anyone that knew Edith loved her and will tell you that she touched their heart deeply.

Edith was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Seadrift. She always had her Bible within reach and you could tell by the pages that she spent a lot of time reading and studying His Word. Edith taught Sunday School for 62 years and was an active member even longer. Many children from Seadrift learned about Jesus’ grace and love and accepted him as their Savior because of her loving, guidance and teaching. Anytime the doors to the church were open, Edith would have her family there. She loved to serve the Lord and it showed in the way she lived her life.

She is survived by her children; Joyce Bradshaw and husband Jim of Brazoria, TX, Jon Madden and wife Glenda of Bremerton, WA, Jackie Hamilton and husband Billy of Seguin, TX, daughter-in-law, Martha Madden of Seadrift, TX, twenty five grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Madden; two sons, Jimmy Madden and Ricky Madden; grandchildren, Stephen Douglas Madden and Edith Lynn Madden; great-grandson, Austin Rieger.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Seadrift with the Rev. Marcos Gohlke officiating. Burial will follow at the Seadrift Cemetery.

Serving as Pallbearers were her grandsons: Jim Madden, Dan Long, William Long, Marty Madden, Kevin Madden, Chris Madden, William Hamilton, Michael Hamilton, Patrick Hamilton.

A film entitled SHOOTER was broadcast on AMC Sunday evening, June 8, 2014 starring Mark Walhberg; this was one of the first of the Bob Lee Swagger books as written by Steven Hunter.  Bob Lee was an incredible sniper who had retired from the military but was brought back into service by our government.  If you enjoyed the film, do come in and see us at the Library; we have a number of Hunter’s books re Bob Lee; many of which, I’m sure you will enjoy reading.

And for the feminine side: Lifetime TV channel has filmed two of V.C.Andrews’ books, PETAL ON THE WIND and FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC.  And these books and many others of Ms. Andrews are also available in our Library.

Karin Slaughter has written a number of books concerning her protagonist, Will Trent as an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. But this last one, entitled CRIMINAL returns to the beginnings of Will’s life and how he became what he did.  The book has more twists and turns than a garter snake in the grass; however, one very strong point was brought out in the book, although having nothing to do with the plot.  In the middle and late 70’s in the South, women were striving for equal pay and positions in many fields; however, although breaking the so-called “glass ceiling”, each woman still had a long ways to go; battling others of her sex.  The great satirist, H.L. Mencken stated this problem so thoroughly when asked to define a “Misogynist:  a man who hates women as much as women hate one another.”  Sad though it was in earlier times, this feeling still prevails today.

P.J. Tracy has written several books concerning Grace MacBride and her crew in Monkeewrench, a software company.  The earlier books all carried a theme of humor in them; however the latest, OFF THE GRID has very little humor in it except with the descriptions of some of the employees.  As a wave of unsolved murders sweep the country, the solution finally evolves; that a total jihad is on point for the United States.  Solving this jihad and the persons involved concerns a local Indian tribe in Minnesota.  The descriptions of the tribe; their customs and beliefs are fascinating; they almost overpower the plot itself.  I’ve read several previous books by P.J. Tracy, a mother and daughter team of writers, and have enjoyed them tremendously.  This one really made you think.

New at our Library is GULF COAST COOKING listed as Seafood from the Florida Keys to the Yucatan Peninsula by Virginia Elverson.  Rated as a cookbook of seafood recipes but really a travelogue of the Gulf Coast with the most unusual and stunning photographs, this book contains the recipe for stuffed crab from Mrs. Raby!  And she and her husband were present in the Library following the arrival of the book.  Mrs. Raby told us that the author came to visit her in Port O’Connor while she and her helpers were preparing a large batch of stuffed crab, and that Ms. Elverson took copious notes to scale the ingredients down to a personal size.  When the book was presented to the Rabys, she discovered the picture of a fisherman in his oilskins and remarked as to how many replacements of the oilskins she and Dan would make during their life on the water.  Mrs. Raby’s recipe is on page 129 of the book, a page that will receive much use.

Attention: Members of Friends of the Library:

The annual meeting of the membership of the Friends of the Library is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2014 beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the POC Elementary School.  This meeting will introduce to the membership the proposed new directors and officers of the Board of Directors as well as further explain the plans for the future of our new library.  Please mark your calendars so you won’t miss this important meeting, and if you have not become a member yet of the Friends, do attend the meeting and get a membership application.

MOTHERS: If you haven’t enrolled your child, ages 2 through 13, in the Summer Reading Program at our Library, DON’T WAIT!  The program begins on Tuesday the 17th and lasts through July 15th with the Awards Ceremony on the 22nd!  Hope to see you there!

Our library now has two full shelves of semi current books for sale, and we’re running out of room on those shelves.  Hard cover books are priced at $1.00 each and soft cover at $0.25.  And what a bargain that is!  You may have missed one of John Grisham’s earlier books and are planning a long vacation; we have that book on our shelf and with a purchase, you don’t have to worry about returning it!  Come see us soon!

Does an employee of Dow Seadrift Operations volunteer at least 25 hours a year for your non-profit organization?  If so, your non-profit organization is probably eligible for a $500 grant through the iGive Dollars for Doers program.
Dollars for Doers recognizes and applauds volunteer efforts of Dow employees by providing them with the opportunity to receive one $500 grant per year on behalf of the organization he/she volunteers for.
