BUNCO met Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in the Community Center once again as the folks involved with the cleanup had moved. Hostessing this time were Judy Overton and Kelly Gee-Cooper. Many winners, too many to name, were awarded prizes; actually, the person in charge of collecting their names goofed! And the necessary names wound up in the trash! Oh, Well, next time!! Bunco in June is being hostessed by Shirley Gordon and Maryann Claiborne on Tuesday evening, June 3rd beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Center. Call Shirley Gordon at the Library, 983-4365 for further information or to make a reservation.

H-100; I’d written about this very unusual organization as conceived by Jim Hooper, “Hoop”, of Hurricane Junction; the aim of it is to be available to step in occasionally when a resident needs additional help; to contribute to our Volunteer Fire Department and other service organizations and facilities here; to possibly help a student begin higher education that earlier seemed inaccessible. This organization of concerned members keeps growing; and one family has entered their 4 legged friend too. For further information and how to be of assistance, contact Hoop; he’ll be happy to be of assistance.

Have you noticed the replacement for the Port Motel on Commerce Street between 14th & 15th? Currently, the contractor is in the process of completion of 5 townhouses, all painted in Southern Florida-Caribbean colors.

Old Port Motel sign comes down.

Can you tell that the warm days of our Summer have arrived? If so, the amount of traffic of boats and trailers and fishermen as well should affirm that belief. It’s so good once again to watch the many boats on the Intercoastal, heading for a favorite fishing spot. And to count once again the many fishing tournaments that are starting this month with the best of all winding up the season by the Grand Slam Tournament staged in memory of Chris Ragusin. Watch our paper for further details.

Rumors abound in any area but they seem to really take off here in Port O’Connor. The latest being that a doughnut shop will be opening shortly on Adams Street as well as the Snow Cone takeout too. Keep your fingers crossed; we may be eating more but walking too.

Luckily, I have been contacted by several former members of our community that have photos dating back to the earlier days of Port O’Connor. These photographs will be copied and then printed in the forthcoming book of pictures of Port O’Connor as being assembled by the Service Club of our area. If you or any of your relatives have photographs of activities, people, church events, school events, fishing, houses, stores, or other applicable items, please contact me or Janet Johnson, our President, 983-4737. We will carefully copy those photographs and return them shortly to the lender, and if that person wishes an additional copy, we can take care of that also. Thank you.

I welcome any correspondence from any organization regarding their current happenings for information to add to this column. Also welcome any remarks from our readers, good or otherwise. I enjoy so much writing this column of happenings; hope you all enjoy reading it!

On May 19, 6:00 p.m. at the Bauer Exhibit Building, County Fairgrounds, Sister Josephine returns to teach us how to roll our own sushi. Bring your own mat (available at HEB for $1.99) and learn how to use it.

NO worries about raw fish. Most sushi rolls used cooked seafood and vegetable. It’s pretty and healthy. Come join the fun.

June 16 will be our next demonstration. The details of it have not been set, but it will surely be informative and delicious.
