Make Plans Now to attend the annual Lighted Boat Parade on December 7, 2013

by Donna Pyle, POC Chamber of Commerce

A long time Port O’ Connor tradition, the Lighted Boat parade is held in conjunction with the Annual Toy Run from Freeport to Port O’Connor. After delivering their boat loads of toys, Toy Run participants then decorate their boats and join local boaters in the lighted boat parade on the ICW. Rain or Shine the parade goes on. Port O’Connor Chamber would love to have you participate. You too can be a part of this annual event and its “free” to anyone who would like to participate. The Port O’Connor Chamber gives cash awards for top entries.

Categories are: Best Overall; Most Spirited; Most Unique; Best Commercial; Best Large Pleasure; Best Medium Pleasure and Best Small Pleasure craft.

All boats and equipment must meet minimum Coast Guard requirements and boat representatives must attend a Safety & Rules meeting that is held at 5:30 pm on Saturday, December 7, 2013, prior to lining up for the parade. Parade route is from around Larry’s Harbor to past Caracol.

Registration forms for the Boat Parade are available from Boat Parade Chairman, Bill Tigrett at bill@tigrett.com; 361.983.2671 or the Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce at poccc@tisd.net; and inside this issue of Dolphin Talk.

Bring a lawn chair to any of the bait shops in Port O’Connor or Caracol to watch the parade. It truly is a unique experience and one that you will come back to every year. If you decide to watch the parade at Caracol, remember to bring a lawn chair and leave the adult beverages at home.

So just come and spend a little winter time in Port O’Connor where there is a slower pace and smaller crowds, Port O’Connor is the “Best Kept Secret on the Coast”. The shops, motels and restaurants are open. Winter fishing is still good; enjoy bird watching, duck hunting, or just relax with a good book and look at the water.

Adopt A Christmas Angel

The committee has met for this year’s Adopt an Angel program, which provides Christmas gifts for some of our less fortunate children in Port O’Connor.

This is how the program works:

From November 18th until December 6th, you can pick up paperwork at POC Hardware which will have your angel information in a numbered envelope. Inside the envelope will be the “vital statistics” for your chosen child: age, gender, grade, clothing size, shoe size and coat size. Shoe and coat sizes are only going to be available if your child needs these items. You do not need to purchase any toys. The Toy Run provides toys.

The committee recommends a spending limit of $100 per child. If you would like to participate but feel that you cannot afford this amount by yourself, enlist a friend or two to split the cost, and share in the fun of shopping and wrapping, along with the glow of knowing you gave a child a nice Christmas.

If you want to participate but are unable to do the shopping, let Wanda or Judith at the Hardware Store know. Santa’s elves will be glad to help.

After you have shopped for your angel, wrap the gifts and put your angel’s number on each gift and take your gifts to POC Hardware. The store will keep the gifts until delivery/pick-up. The employees at the Hardware Store are most gracious in helping us to complete this project each year.

The deadline to return gifts will be December 16th. See if by participating, it doesn’t make your Christmas merrier!

If You Need to Put a Child on This Year’s Angel List:

Angels are now being accepted for the Adopt An Angel Program. PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! This is a large program and it takes numerous people to get it up and going.

You should contact Wanda Redding or Judith Bowman, at the POC Hardware (983-2708) during the store’s business hours.
Strict confidentiality will be maintained. Even the kind souls who adopt these angels do not know the identity of the child.

The parent or guardian only may put a child on the list and make arrangements. The child must live in Port O’Connor and be between the ages of one year and fifth grade. School-age children must attend Port O’Connor School. Do not put relatives’ children on the list unless they live with you.

You will need to furnish the child’s age, grade, clothing sizes. You may also include any special interest that your child may have.

Please use this program if you need, but do not abuse it. If you have used the program in the past, and if you can, maybe this year you can adopt an angel.

Pull your outdoor decorations out of storage, and – Ready, Set, Go!! The Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Christmas Outdoor Lighting Contest for 2013 and will be handing out plaques for the categories listed below. Let’s put up the trees and tinsel and light up Port O’Connor!
