Those Bunco Ladies are at it again! Meeting on Tuesday evening, June 4th, these women gathered at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Center to once again enjoy some delicious food and each other prior to begin playing. And play they did despite the emergence of Elvira, although she only was present at one table. Carrying home the prize for winning the most games was Sally Jones with Shirley Gordon placing a close second. And Evelyn Lewis was the winner(?) of the least games with Biddie Hileman and Diane Cooley tying for the Booby prize, but the runoff gave it to Diane. The hostesses for the July celebration will be Biddie Hileman and Sally Jones and that should leave everyone awaiting the fireworks as those two really set things off. Mothers: As your children have a tendency to grow during the Summer months; please be advised that the POC Service Club is accepting donations of clothes, furniture, books, kitchen equipment, bedding and other household items. Please contact the Chairman of the Garage Sales, Lydia Strakos 983-2003 or the Assistant Chairman, Debby Busby 512 914-9521 to arrange for pickup and storage of large items. Or you can take smaller items to the County Barn located adjacent to the Library. As the date for our Fall Garage Sale is not too far in the future, we will await any donations of usable and clean items.

Under the management of Margaret Claiborne with an incredible staff to serve you scrumptious sandwiches of your choice, the place was mobbed earlier in the week with many hungry folks waiting in line. With the addition of Subway and their tasty foods, us poor tired women will now have another choice for dinner following an exhausting day!

mbers: Please mark your calendars that the meeting date for July has been changed! As we normally meet only the first Thursday of the month during Summer months, therefore the July meeting would fall on the 4th. As that is Independence Day, our meeting date has been changed to the following Thursday, the 11th. Hope to see a full turnout at that time.

We had a very unusual visitor in the Library several days ago. While reorganizing and reshelving nonfiction books, I moved two from one shelf and found a large garter snake absorbing the knowledge of American Indians. Immediately halting that job, Virgil Redding was called; he appeared with another helper, and they promptly banished the snake from our Library. And their entrance way was immediately closed! We do get somewhat different visitors in our Library!

As the Summer days continue with warmth and bugs as you travel on the roads, I found a solution that really works for removing them from your car. Take a piece of toweling or handy rag and moisten it with WD-40 and gently rub on the hood and bumper of your vehicle. You will find that the bugs literally vanish with no work at all, and since WD-40 is composed of fish oil, it will not hurt the finish!

I had the opportunity to meet once again with Gloria Fric following the weekend honoring the returning members of the military from their involvement in our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As most of you know, Gloria, fondly known as the Dragon Lady, has been in charge of the sculptures composed of sand for the last 5 years in front of the Community Center. Speaking with Gloria she gave me some amazing figures: there were 200 TONS of sand used, wet and compressed to sculpt these stunning displays; there were 4 Master Sculptors, most locally but one from Canada, and 20 helpers to do various jobs, including wetting the sand. But each of them paid their own way here; they are not salaried so any help that can be given to them, monetarily, is very much appreciated. And, Gloria designs each of the themes and panels herself, and she left here the end of May with an idea for 2014.

Gloria and I compared notes from previous years; one year in particular when several Viet Nam vets came over to see her work, and each of the many sculptors and helpers came out to greet and hug them. One day my husband took a neighbor, our “Cricket”, to see the work in progress, and he was not just amazed but extremely touched with the designs denoting the service of the military. When I told Gloria that Cricket had died several months later, she became somewhat emotional and gave me further information about his visit.

There is one design this year that is extremely powerful. (Shown on page 9.) When you look at the picture, I hope that it will convey the strong meaning of the design. Quite frankly, it brought tears to my eyes as I stood there, somewhat stunned. If you have not seen the actual sculpture, please take the opportunity to visit the entire scene, as Gloria has done her best to honor so many who have served. And, weather permitting, it will be there until the first of July.

The Sportsman Scholarship (in Memory of Jesse Giessel, Nick Pack, and Dusty May) is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s scholarships. There are six scholarships of $500 each and they were awarded May 24.

Recipients are:

Melanie Abraham, who plans to attend Texas A&M Corpus Christi studying Criminal Justice.

Brantley Bordorsky, studying Animal Science at Blinn College

Daniel Crober, attending Blinn studying Veterinarian Science.

Jake Meyer, studying Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M College Station.

Greyson Parker, going to Sam Houston State University studying Business.

Brooke Sassman, studying Nursing at Blinn.

We are very proud to be able to present these scholarships to such enterprising students, and wish them each the best in all of their endeavors.

The MUD Board acknowledged with THANKS to everyone in Port O’Connor for voting “FOR” the Board to issue $10,000,000 in Bonds to refinance the current bonds they have at a lower interest rate.

A presentation was made to the Board by “Awesome Net” to lease space on the water tower.  The Board will investigate this and report at the next meeting.

The Board will soon have a “Drive Thru Drop Box” for customers to pay their monthly bill. The Box will be located in the drive in front of the current office at 39 Denman Drive.  We will keep everyone advised.

The Texas Legislature has approved the name change of PORT O’CONNOR MUNICIPAL UTILITIES DISTRICT to PORT O’CONNOR IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT effective immediately.  The Legislature also approved the District implementing a “DISTRICT SALES TAX” (UPON APPROVAL OF PORT O’CONNOR VOTERS).  In the November 2013 Election, Port O’Connor voters will vote on the Sales Tax and a Bond Request by the Board.

The POC Improvement District Board will be holding a “TOWN HALL MEETING” before the November Election to explain both the “SALES TAX ISSUE” and the “BOND ISSUE”.

Everyone is invited to attend the Port O’Connor Improvement District meetings which are held in the Board Office every second Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM.  The next meeting will be Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 7:00 PM.
