Chapel Happenings by Erny McDonough

Fisherman’s Bible Institute Graduates Front Row: Instructor Joane McDonough, Vera Wiatt, Patricia McKnight, Darin Luna; Back Row: Kim Sonnier, Joe Wiatt, Julian Garcia (participant), Carol Haverfield, Alyssa Garcia (participant)

The Chapel is energetically moving forward in many areas. We are seeing our attendance grow and participation in our community efforts double! God has been so good to us!

Our major event for May was Warrior’s Weekend. Our part of the puzzle is providing the Saturday morning breakfast. We could not possibly do this task without much help. One generous family provided all the 200 dozen eggs. Mike from Speedy Stop helped us get milk; Bubba and Kim from Bubba’s Smoked Meats provided the sausage (and he now has pan sausage available); Patty, a young mother from Seadrift, helped by making flour tortillas; many people from the Chapel donated many individual items, and a lot of people made cash contributions to help us provide over 2,000 breakfast tacos that Saturday morning. I could not possibly name all those who came to help crack eggs, (Thanks, Carol, for heading up this project.) nor those who showed up at the Community Center at 4:00 a.m. to get the food ready to serve. One family took the “egg pans” home and returned them clean! We had one preacher friend who came from Edna to make sure everyone had enough coffee and ladies from the Friendswood area who served the troops in the tent. I believe we will all have to rest before the next Warrior’s Weekend and look forward to being a part of it again!

Recently, we have hosted several missionaries. The Reverend Danny Parker is a missionary to America; the Reverend Tom and Kathi Moore are missionaries to Belize; Missionaries Josh and Kim work in China; and on June 30, we will host Missionaries Aaron and Shannon Morgan who are soon going to Europe. Patrick and Hermano Jessie have ministered here several times and Poastor Joane has been helping out in Bloomington in the absence of their pastor.

One June 9, we graduated six from our Fisherman’s Bible Institute and had two who audited the classes. Pastor Joane did an outstanding job as the Institute’s professor and emceed the graduation exercises. We enjoyed an “All-Church fellowship” meal in conjunction with the other activities. Classes will begin this fall, so begin letting Pastor Joane know that you plan to attend.

Captain Robert will be at the Chapel beginning on June 21 for another Captain’s Class. All interested persons should contact Captain Robert at 361-816-3010 or the Sea Academy at 361-758-6184. Captain Robert has taught classes at the Chapel since 2000 and many people are now providing for their families as boat captains. If this is something you have dreamed of doing, please contact Captain Robert as soon as possible to be ready for this class or future classes.

July is looking like another busy month. We begin the month with the beloved Reverend Joe Granberry ministering on July 7 at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Granberry served the South Texas District as Superintendent for many years, and recently was spared certain death when a tornado struck the hay barn he was in. He will be sharing this exciting story of God’s grace and protection. You will not want to miss it!

July 12-15 will be Kid’s Kamp for our kids ages 6 to 12. We are expecting to take 15 kids to Kerrville for a time of fun and spiritual renewal. This will be a new experience for most of our kids, but one they will never forget.

July 17-20 will be Poco Bueno time for the Chapel. This year our mission will be a church in Southeastern Houston. They are surrounded by poverty, but are reaching out with a feeding program that we want to assist. Everyone is welcome to come and help us clean and store the fish. As usual, we will be cleaning them at the Chapel.

As you can tell, the Chapel is a place where we love the Lord and show it by loving people! We not only provide educational opportunities, spiritual services, and special times for the kids of this community (Friday Night Youth), but we also provide food, clothing, and even furniture to needy families in this area. You will always find a warm welcome at the Chapel. We not only have Sunday Bible Study at 10:00 a.m. and Morning Service at 11:00 a.m., but also offer a spirited Sunday evening service at 6:00 p.m. and a 7:00 p.m. Wednesday service. You are urged to, “Come, grow with us!”

What’s Happening At First Baptist Church? by Doyle Adams

A very busy week at First Baptist Church. The 2013 Vacation Bible, “Colossal Coaster World”, was a tremendous success! The School was held from 9:00 a.m. until noon each day from June 10 to June 13. Children from two years old to the sixth grade attended each day. Average children attendance was 56, with adult workers attendance of 37. the children donated, through their pennies, a total of $280.00 to be forwarded to the South Texas Children’s Home in Beeville, Texas.

Each day the children gathered at 9:00 a.m. to Pledge Allegiance to the American Flag, Christian Flag, and the Bible. The children went to their age group classes and for snack, recreation, music, missions, and crafts.

On Thursday evening, June 13, the Graduation Ceremonies were held in the church auditorium. The auditorium was filled with children, parents, grandparents, relatives and friends and they were treated to a music program presented by the 56 children. Diplomas were presented to teach child and each was applauded.

After the graduation program, everyone toured the classrooms and viewed the work and crafts made by the children. Cakes, cookies and punch were served to everyone. All agreed that the 2013 VBS was the BEST and the Director was CANDICE STRYKER! Congratulations, and THANKS to everyone for your HARD WORK!

See you in church Sunday!

“Who ya’ gonna call? Calhoun County Radio Hams!”

Public Demo of Emergency Communications June 22-23

Despite the Internet, cell phones, email and modern communications, every year whole regions find themselves in the dark. Tornadoes, fires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave people without the means to communicate. In these cases, the one consistent service that has never failed has been Amateur Radio. These radio operators, often called “hams” provide backup communications for everything from the American Red Cross to FEMA and even for the International Space Station. Calhoun County “hams” will join with thousands of other Amateur Radio operators showing their emergency capabilities the weekend of June 22-23.

Over the past year, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications during unexpected emergencies in towns across America including the California wildfires, winter storms, tornadoes and other events world-wide. When trouble is brewing, Amateur Radio’s people are often the first to provide rescuers with critical information and communications. The public will have a chance to meet and talk with local ham radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about as hams across the USA will be holding public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities.

This annual event, called “Field Day”, is the climax of the week long “Amateur Radio Week” sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio. Using only emergency power supplies, ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and backyards around the country. More than 35,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year’s event. Their slogan, “When All Else Fails, Ham Radio Works” is more than just words to the hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, internet or any other infrastructure that can be
compromised in a crisis. “The fastest way to turn a crisis into a total disaster is to lose communications,” said Allen Pitts of the ARRL. “From the earthquake and tsunami in Japan to tornadoes in Missouri, ham radio provided the most reliable communication networks in the first critical hours of the events. We need nothing between us but air.”

In the Port Lavaca area, the Port Lavaca Amateur Radio Club will be demonstrating Amateur Radio at the historic Half Moon Reef Lighthouse at the Bauer Center (the intersection of State Highways 35 and 238) on Saturday, June 22, 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. They invite the public to come and see ham radio’s new capabilities and learn how to get their own FCC radio license before the next disaster strikes.

There are over 700,000 Amateur Radio licensees in the US, and more than 2.5 million around the world. Through the ARRL’s Amateur Radio Emergency Services program, ham volunteers provide both emergency communications for thousands of state and local emergency response agencies and non-emergency community services too, all for free.
