Pursued by the Past by Rev. Donnie L. Martin

The point may seem elementary; but all of us have a past. Somewhere in our lives, there are things we wish we could forget—things that, if we could find a way to do it, we’d simply make it go away, as though it had never happened. You may not be the not-so-proud owner of a rotting corpse in your closet, but perhaps you’d give anything to wipe away some incident of utter humiliation in your life; or you’d recall words of bitterness and hatefulness spoken in a moment of uncontrolled anger. Maybe in your past, you told a lie on someone that wounded that person deeply. No doubt, we can all think of moments that haunt our minds.

However, perhaps your past failures bear a more serious hue. You’d like to forget those things were ever a part of your life, but the thoughts of what you’ve done seem to constantly dog your steps, hounding your weary mind day after miserable day. Over and over, your thoughts are consumed by one thought, “How could I have been so foolish.”

Well, the good news is that for the child of God—those who have turned their back on their sins, and given their heart and life to Christ, there is the promise of complete forgiveness. God’s Word tells us that, “…the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7b). In verse nine of that chapter, we are assured that, “If we confess our sins, he [God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Maybe you’re aware that God has promised forgiveness for your past sins, but you just can’t seem to rid yourself of the feeling that the “Hounds of Hell” are going to catch up with you one day. Again, the truth of God’s Word should help us here. The Bible says, “…and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:19b). Speaking of the superior nature of Christ’s priesthood and His intercessions for sinners, the writer of the Book of Hebrews wrote, “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more” (Heb. 10:17). Does God need to say anything more on this subject? But there is more. God further assures us with these words: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Romans 8:1).

Allow me to conclude with the following true story.

In the 14th century, Robert Bruce of Scotland was leading his men in a battle to gain independence from England. Near the end of the conflict, the English wanted to capture Bruce to keep him from the Scottish crown. So they put his own bloodhounds on his trail. When the bloodhounds got close, Bruce could hear their baying. His attendant said, “We are done for. They are on your trail, and they will reveal your hiding place.”

Bruce replied, “It’s all right.” Then he headed for a stream that flowed through the forest. He plunged in and waded upstream a short distance. When he came out on the other bank, he was in the depths of the forest. Within minutes, the hounds, tracing their master’s steps, came to the bank. They went no farther. The English soldiers urged them on, but the trail was broken. The stream had carried the scent away. A short time later, the crown of Scotland rested on the head of Robert Bruce.

The memory of our sins, prodded on by Satan, can be like those baying dogs—but a stream flows, red with the blood of God’s own Son. By grace through faith we are safe. No sin-hound can touch us. The trail is broken by the precious blood of Christ. “The purpose of the cross,” someone observed, “is to repair the irreparable.” 1

You don’t have to be pursued by your past anymore. “Jesus paid it all/ All to Him I owe;/ Sin had left a crimson stain,/ He washed it white as snow.” 2

Gordy is a natural bob tail, a gray and brown tabby with lots of white and is almost 2 years old. He is such a gentleman, never has a cross word with the other cats, is very polite in asking for attention and very appreciative of kind words and petting. We think Gordy is just grand!

Beth is adorable! Mostly blonde and white, she has some dark gray accents on her ears and face and BIG brown eyes. About a year old, she’s a terrier mix – a little bit of this and that, all of it cute. At 23 pounds she’s lap size, lovable and very people friendly.

Come see Beth, Gordy and all the other animals at the Port Lavaca Animal Shelter, 201 Stringham Drive (across from the rodeo arena), Monday through Saturday,10 to 2, or call the Calhoun County Humane Society, 553-8916. You can also view them and other animals ready for adoption on line at: www.calhouncountyhumanesociety.org

Thanks and we’ll be waiting for you!

Cooking with Seafood continues at the Fairgrounds in the Bauer Exhibit building in Port Lavaca once a month at 6:00 p.m.

On May 6th, Sr. Josephine from Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic School taught us how to make delicious and nutritious Vietnamese Fresh Spring Rolls. Normally made with cooked shrimp, these rolls are a nice change from the usual fried egg rolls we are most familiar with eating.

June 3rd is the return of the always entertaining Leslie Hartman, with a yet to be determined flounder recipe. Game Warden Philip Bird will also be there with a presentation about our local fish and fishing regulations.

Other dates to mark are July 1, August 5, September 9, October 7, and November 4. Details to follow as dates approach. Plan to join us in these fun and informative cooking lessons.

Jayson Amason received his Private Pilot Certificate on May 7th in 979CA with examiner Charlie McDougal. He is pictured with Chief Flight Instructor Erin Michael.

Jayson Amason has had a desire to learn to fly since he can remember. He was born and raised in the Seadrift/Calhoun County area. He moved away, graduated from Ball High Galveston then returned and started Amason Air in 1995 in Seadrift, Texas. He currently resides in Port Lavaca.

In October 2002, he finally made the decision to begin flight training. Jayson never thought it would be such an extended training course.

“I started with a small flying school that really didn’t have the facilities and training programs that met my needs. I’m not saying they were not capable of training but it wasn’t what I needed to stay focused,” said Amason. “So, after training for a while, work and personal incidents seemed to intrude my fun activities – my Private Pilot Certificate was put on hold.”

Eventually, Calhoun Air Center opened in Port Lavaca and he started flying at the new flight school. The flight school now operates out of Victoria, Texas.

“Wow — the training planes and the staff were amazing and so professional,” he said. “The new school and advanced training completed my unfinished foundation that was needed and also started enhancing my flying skills. Thank you and kudos to Calhoun Air Center.”

Flying has taught Jayson to slow down, focus and enjoy an activity that is completely rewarding.

“Jayson has been an inspiring student to work with. He began his aviation journey over ten years ago,” commented Erin Michael, Chief Flight Instructor. “I have been flying with him since November and through hard work and determination Jayson passed his Private Pilot Check ride today. I am inspired by his choice not to give up on his dream of aviation!”

Jayson intends on using his private license as a hobby and family fun. He says they are all waiting patiently for him to take them on their first flight. He can hardly wait for it either! They are looking forward to finding different places to visit which are nearby; eventually planning on longer trips.

“I would encourage a person to follow your dream of flying and turn your dream into reality,” said Amason. “It’s a great learning experience and the sky is the limit. You will be happy with the hard work.”
