Port O’Connor friends, if you get the chance and the time please read The Time of Our Lives by Tom Brokaw. He tells it like it is. Where America has been and where we are going if we don’t improve our education system. To quote, “In 2010 President Obama’s big educational initiative, race to the top, he offered States a total of 4,35 billion in grants to change their education polices to make them more effective. That is less than the Department of Defense spent in Iraq in June of the same year. Does that make sense to you? G.B. Robertson PS: When I finish with the book I will lend it to anybody who would like to read it.

The Dolphin welcomes letters from our readers on any subject that is of general interest to our audience. Letters should be 300 words or less (with exceptions at the Dolphin’s discretion). Letters reflect the opinion of the writer, and not that of Dolphin Talk staff, and we retain the right to determine suitability for publication. It is the policy of this newspaper to promote area interests: therefore, complaints against local businesses should be directed elsewhere. Letters must be signed and include day and evening phone numbers, which will not be published. Your name will be withheld upon request, but anonymous material will not be considered for publication.

At our May meeting, Club members voted to forward an amount that will substantially cover the costs of eggs and other items for Saturday’s Warrior’s Weekend breakfast, provided by Fisherman’s Chapel.

Additionally, a donation was voted to provide an amount for the Building Fund for the proposed new  library that the Friends of the Library are sponsoring.  Ginnie Lichac, President of the Friends, was present to receive and acknowledge the donation and mention that a membership meeting of the Friends was scheduled for June 20th  at the Community Center.

Two new committees have been established for the following: a committee to seek the necessary legal advice that becomes crucial with the activities of a non-profit organization and a committee to acknowledge the help of many persons and members, as a thank you is always well received.

One of the joys of Club membership is the presence of a new member, and we are all so pleased to welcome Mary Hirschhauser, not only a resident of Port O’Connor but Victoria as well.  Mary made quite an impression with her dedicated work at the last Garage Sale, and we look forward to her presence throughout the year.

We always welcome the presence at any of our meetings of  women interested in the possibilities of membership, and we look forward to meeting you and providing you with more complete information about our projects and various activities.  If you would like to attend the next meeting on June 6th or wish further information concerning us, please contact either Janet Johnson, President, 983-4733 or Shirley Gordon, Membership Chairman, 983-4365.

Notice all the flags leading to the Community Center? For the third year, Club members and their husbands have erected these flags to welcome the servicemen and women visiting Port O’Connor during this Warrior’s Weekend. We are so proud to be able to do this. We hope this weekend will be fondly remembered by them, and we are happy to have a part in giving honor and thanks to these brave warriors.
