Voice of Democracy – Calhoun County

We applaud the Port Lavaca Wave for the second political forum held at the Bauer Community Center. Both political party candidates did very well and answered the questions.

Our constitutional rights were certainly exercised Tuesday evening. Freedom of speech, the right to assemble and all our freedoms that all of us appreciate and hold close to our hearts.

Channel 25, Chamber of Commerce, Tina Crow and all the staff did well conducting the forum and presenting the questions that were chosen by the committee. Larry Robinson was the moderator and was very fair to all candidates.

Each year the attendance grows and improves. The only thing we missed was Larry Robinson’s singing. Evelyn Burleson, Democratic Chair, and I agree.

Thank you, Larry, the Port Lavaca Wave, Channel 25 and Chamber of Commerce.

Russell Cain
Republican Chair- Calhoun County & Port Lavaca

My take on the economy and the loss of jobs:

This downward turn has been going on for some time, not just the last four years. Every time there is a merger, a buy-out or a hostile take over someone loses their job, and the competition flies out the window.

This has occurred in the oil companies, the funeral homes, the hospitals, nursing homes, just to name a few. I just found out that one company controls the eye care business.

What happened to the Sherman anti trust act?

Allan Greenspan told President that the banks didn’t need more regulations put on them. We all know what happened. The directors took exorbitant salaries, made bad loans knowing the government would bail them out. Now Greenspan admits that he was wrong.

President Reagan gave the wealthy a tax cut then threw money to the military like we had plenty. This put us into a double digit recession. Of course it bankrupt the Russians trying to keep up.

Today companies in the meat processing business and the housing building business use illegals to do their work, knowing they won’t complain about poor working conditions for fear of being fired.

Also American owned companies are showing the corporate headquarters overseas to avoid paying taxes.

These are just a few reasons that we are in a down fall as for as jobs go. This just my thoughts.

Imports from China

After watching the debate tonight, my wife and I agreed that America buys cheap.

Case in point. In Houston we have a neighbor who came here from Viet Nam some years ago and now works for a big air condition mfg. He tells me that his company will buy some compressors made in Ohio for $250 and another one made in China for $80 and the one made here is so much better and will last much longer.

What do we do? Our air goes out so what do we do? We call several co’s and ask for a price on one that is 3 tons and puts out so many btu’s What do we do then. Like most people we take the one that is cheaper. We need some hardware so since we are going to be in Port Lavaca anyway we go to Wallmart where no one knows anything about hardware or plumbing. We could have gone to POC Hardware or Melchers in Port Lavaca and got the right parts. Of course they don’t have food, fishing tackle or clothes like Walmart. We do what is easy and look for the cheaper price.

This is one of the reasons that we have lost so many jobs here in America.

Green Energy Gets A Pass

Has anyone been reading lately, about wind turbines and bird kills? I have been thinking about this ever since Seadrift installed its very own wind turbine. I really don’t know if ours has killed anything or not, but I do know wind turbines are not designed for inhabited areas. A huge setback is critical, because buildings inhibit wind, and in case of turbine failure due to fire or shattering, it is best not to have buildings nearby. There are lots of instances of both of these, but they are not widely reported. Seems like the one here is right in the middle of a pretty residential, if small area. I am sure you are thinking I must be a liberal birdwatcher who doesn’t care about how much more efficient and cost effective wind power is supposed to be than using dirty old oil…. I mean we have to make some sacrifices, right? What are a few dead birds?

True, I am a 66 year old bird watcher all right. I’ve been watching birds in N.Y., AZ, FL, and TX since I was about 6 or 7 years old. And yes, I am upset about wind turbines killing off thousands of birds and bats, but I am just as upset about the fact that what is really being killed off is the US Constitution. In this case, the 14th Amendment. There happens to be something in there about equality under the law.

It seems that while wind turbines have been massacring birds by the thousands all over the United States… no fines have ever been levied. Fines against killing birds, you ask? Can’t be true, that would be silly… green energy is too important. Well, you would be right about that. Green energy is SOOO important that wind farms are not fined at all. Oil companies however, are a different matter.

Seven oil companies have recently been charged in federal court with killing migratory birds that died after allegedly landing in oil waste pits, or were electrocuted since January 2007. PacifiCorp paid $10.5 million in fines, restitution and equipment upgrade costs for killing 232 golden eagles, 46 hawks, 50 owls, and nearly 200 other birds that were electrocuted. Exxon Mobile paid $600,000 for 85 birds killed in waste pits.

But in 2009, The Fish and Wildlife Service estimated 440,000 birds were killed by wind turbines, but not one fine was given.

The obvious conclusion would be…wind is good, oil is bad. Equal protection and equality under the law does not seem to apply anymore. It bothers me greatly that all these winged creatures of God are being killed in the name of progressing toward ‘green energy’, but it bothers me just as much, that under the current administration at least, the Constitution and what it stands for seems to be just as disposable as these birds.

Prior to the actual start of the meeting, Sylvia Martinez of our EMS was present to personally thank the membership for their donation that has partially funded the purchase of the defibrillator. This life saving unit has been installed in the entry of the Community Center and is to be used for an emergency during which a member of the EMS will also be on hand. Sylvia stressed that funds from the County only cover a partial amount necessary for equipment, and that the help from our Community has become vital to keep the EMS in operation. Both the EMS and Fire Department are extremely grateful for the support of the citizens and organizations of POC.

Agenda for the October 18, 2012 meeting of the Service Club centered around several upcoming events, with the first being the Fall Garage & Bake Sale as scheduled for Saturday, November 3, 2012. The Sale will begin again at 8:00 a.m. and continue until the last item on the tables is gone. The hardworking Chairman of the Sale is Lydia Strakos, and she is stressing to the community at large that although we have been accepting various donations for the Sale during the past several months, we are continuing to need them. Many items can be donated such as outgrown children’s clothes; women’s as well as men’s clothing; that purse that you no longer need or a necklace that just doesn’t fit. We are also looking for kitchen items of dishes, glasses, pots and pans, and special baking dishes, also those superb decorative bits of this and that which no longer suit your mood or decor. Tools as well as fishing gear are very welcome as are various pieces of furniture. Please contact Lydia at 983-2003 or 983-2341; her Assistant, Debbie Busby 512 914-9521 or our President, Janet Johnson 983-4737 to arrange for storage of these castoff or no longer necessary items.

Members have also been alerted that following the meeting on Thursday, the morning and early afternoon hours will be dedicated to setting up the tables and sorting items on the tables.

Although Christmas will not arrive for several months, that does not mean that the members of this organization are lacking in thought or planning for that season. Chairmen Pat Ekstrom and Pat Turk of the annual Christmas Luncheon for our senior residents, announced that the entrees for the Luncheon will once again be baked ham accompanied by beef brisket. The members will be providing the various items of mashed and sweet potatoes, vegetables, salad, cranberries and desserts of all kinds. As, luckily, our membership keeps growing and many of our members are from dissimilar backgrounds, those special dishes will create an unbelievable choice for our guests. Do plan to mark Friday, December 7, 2012, on your calendar for attending the annual Senior Citizen Christmas Luncheon as prepared by the members of the Port O’Connor Service Club. You won’t be disappointed by the huge array of excellent foods!

And along with the Christmas Luncheon, it had been announced at a previous meeting that Chairmen Joyce Jordan and Sue Kubecka of the Decorating Committee have planned to create an old fashioned Christmasy atmosphere in the Center’s Main Hall. Table decorations will be the many Santas and Angels and Snowmen from years past along with greenery, red bows, and even some fancy stockings to hang. Candle lights will be interspersed among the greenery and possibly some hurricane lanterns will be used to enhance the theme. And the date of our Trim the Tree Party has been changed from the Monday following Thanksgiving (the 26th) to Monday, the 3rd of December, commencing at 9:30 a.m.

A letter from Erny McDonough, the Pastor of Fisherman’s Chapel and a representative of the POC Benevolence Fund, was read to the membership asking for help to cover the costs of the Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets that have become so necessary to some residents of our Community. Pastor McDonough explained that the POC Benevolence Fund is composed of representatives from each local church and that the Fund with the aid of local organizations and citizens have been providing the baskets of food for a number of years. A donation of money will then be forwarded to the Benevolence Fund to help in the purchase of these Baskets.

Our next meeting is set for Thursday morning, November 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Community Center. If any woman in this area wishes to become a part of this organization, please contact either President, Janet Johnson at 983-4737 or Membership Chairman, Shirley Gordon, 983-4365 for further information.

Are you ready? Do you have your pencil and paper in hand and your thinking cap on for your plans in designing your Christmas Outdoor Lighting? It’s hard to believe that it is almost that time again.
The Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce is planning for the upcoming Christmas Season and the Christmas Outdoor Lighting Contest. The judging will be held on Wednesday, December 12th and Thursday, December 13th.

There are several awards to be won by those who have not won plaques in the past two years – so watch for details and the entry blanks to be printed in upcoming issues of The Dolphin Talk. But for now – make your plans to light up your home and/or business to bring the Christmas Spirit to Port O’Connor!

It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of 2012! Soon, election Day will have come and gone, surely summer sun will turn into autumn fun, and Thanksgiving and Christmas will arrive! We have a very active congregation and are planning some exciting events for the days ahead.

We were blessed with a testimony of a missionary to Mexico who told us of the kidnapping of his son and of Divine intervention. We certainly rejoiced with such encouraging news that when the enemy does his worst, God is still on the Throne and will work all things together for our good and His glory! This past Sunday, Hermano Jessie Alderete ministered about the hour that we are living in – the dawning of the Coming of the Lord. We were all spurred to draw nearer and work harder for the Lord in these Last Days.

Joane and I were blessed with a special “Pastor’s Appreciation” gift that will send us to Kerrville for a special retreat this week. We are looking forward to the cooler evenings that the Hill Country will have, but also excited about being back home for next weekend. Houston Johnson, former youth leader for this area, will be our guest speaker on the evening of October 28. You will be blessed by attending!

Attention, all Friday Night Youth! Wednesday, October 31 has been declared Youth Night at the Chapel. We will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be out by 8:15-8:30 p.m., so the youth can get their “beauty sleep”! The evening will consist of youth activities and “pumpkin decorating”. There will be refreshments and candy will be passed out as the youth head home. It will be a fun night and all the youth from this area are urged to come.

Our beloved Reverend Howard and Margie Burroughs will be with us again for one service only. Sunday morning, November 4, the Burroughs will be ministering here at the Chapel. For many years, this excellent couple led about 300 churches into spiritual gains. They have retired and now travel to churches to encourage them to be what they have been called to be. Most of us have heard the Burroughs minister, but if you have not, you will not want to miss this special service.

We are planning a special Veteran’s Day celebration at the Chapel. We are encouraging all those who have loved ones serving in our military to get their pictures to Hermano Jessie (210/625-0446) as soon as possible in preparation for this special observance. There will be other special guests that will be coming from San Antonio. Hermano Jessie has been in the Army for 27 years and will bring with him a special understanding of our servicemen and women and what we can do to bless them. Everyone is invited to attend this special Veteran’s Day service.

The Community Thanksgiving Service will be hosted by the Chapel on Sunday, November 18, at 6:00 p.m. Port O’Connor Baptist Pastor, the Reverend Donnie Martin, will be bringing the message. A special offering will be received to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes to needy families in our community. We trust that everyone will make this an extra special offering. In the past few years, additional funds have been sought to meet this need, but when we all do our best, God will make up the rest!

NOTICE: Names of families who need food baskets must reach me (361/983-2619 or cell 361/218-6693) no later than Sunday, November 11 to have a box prepared for them. Remember, our goal is not to feed greed – only need! Boxes will be distributed on Tuesday, November 20.

The Chapel has already filled its calendar with the Christmas activities! We love Thanksgiving because it gets us ready for receiving the Christ of Christmas! You are invited to share in the activities of the Chapel and are urged to, “Come, grow with us!”
