Birders and nature photographers celebrated the inaugural SA Bay Day in Seadrift on Sept. 29. The event was hosted by the San Antonio Bay Partnership to raise awareness of how people and the environment rely on the bay. Some 28 species of birds, many of them migratory, were identified by participants on the birding excursion.

(Photo below:) Seen here are Julie Sullivan (left) and Bea Harrison (right), both of The Nature Conservancy, leading the excursion. Informational exhibits and lunch were provided as part of the event, which coincided with National Estuaries Day.

We invite you to have a spooky good time at the airport’s 2nd Annual Monster Bash! Dress up and trick or treat with your favorite monsters, roam around with scary goblins, ghouls and enjoy the haunted house! The EAA Victoria Chapter will give children ages 8 – 17 free airplane rides via the Young Eagles program. Start the crisp morning off with the Monster Dash – 5K Run Walk.

Then hurry back – there’s plenty for the public; Young Eagles Flights, face painting, moon walks, hay rides, pumpkin decorating contests, music, bobbing for apples, a toy walk, arts & craft booths and food vendors. End the night with the Costume Contest and don’t forget to decorate your vehicle for the Trunk or Treat. Plus there’s plenty of competition for pilots; golf ball drop and pumpkin drop. The whole family is sure to have a terror-iffic time so don’t miss out.

It’s Time for the Annual 5K!

The 2nd 5K is here. Natasha Helm is the coordinator of the POC 5K.  We want to thank her for all the hard work she puts into this. She works for months getting everything and everyone organized for this event. Last year it was very organized and we’re sure this year will be just as successful. There will be lots of children and adults enjoying a wonderful fun-filled Saturday morning on the streets of Port O’Connor.  So when you get up Saturday morning, put on your walking shoes and come on down to King Fisher Beach, as you do not have to run, you can just walk or watch others that do run or walk. There will be lots of people to meet and just watching this event is quite a sight.

It’s amazing how many people there are.  Last year I talked to a man from Colorado who had heard about the run while he and his daughter were in Rockport. He brought his daughter here to our competition. There will also be some vendors at the event and you can join in the Silent Auction. You might just find an article that you have been looking for. I was told that some streets will be closed due to the race; I do not know which ones, but please watch for these closures and give the right of way to the runners.  Go to poc5k.com for more information.

Have a Great and Safe Time in Port O’Connor!

Texas State Marine Archeologist To Tell of Civil War Gunships

The Calhoun County Museum is pleased to announce that Amy Borgens, the Texas State Marine Archeologist, will be speaking at the Calhoun County Museum at 301 S Ann, Port Lavaca on November 2, 2012 at 1:30 PM.

In 1862, Indianola and Port Lavaca were bombarded by the Union gunships, the USS Westfield and the USS Clifton. The Westfield was destroyed on January 1, 1863, by her own captain, who lost his life along with 12 of his crew members.

In 2009, divers and salvage crews started the excavation of the Westfield in the waters of Galveston Bay. Ms. Borgens has been involved with the excavation of a number of ships, including the Belle and the USS Westfield.

Please call 361.553.4689 if you plan to attend.

Remember to wish these friends and neighbors a Happy Birthday!
