Additional Whooping Crane Habitat Now Under Protection

More than 170 acres of undeveloped whooping crane habitat is now under conservation protection in Lamar Peninsula, north of Rockport, in a property purchase coordinated by Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program, Whooping Crane Conservation Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The groups partnered to purchase the privately owned 178 acres in Holiday Beach area. The endangered species spend the winter in the area, and have been seen on this property. “The acquisition of this property is important to CBBEP because it is occupied whooping crane habitat,” said Jake Herring, CBBEP property manager.

CBBEP received the funds for the purchase through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Endangered Species Recovery Land Acquisition Grant Program, administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Matching funds were provided by the Whooping Crane Conservation Association. The Nature Conservancy also assisted in the property purchase.

Whooping Crane Conservation Association President Lorne Scott said the wintering habitat in Texas is more confined and threatened than the Canadian breeding grounds. “The wintering habitat is so scarce and so unavailable, anything that does come up and has potential, we try to secure it,” he said.

Fireworks on the Beach, July7th!

Forty-four years ago a local POC resident purchased a bag of fireworks and, along with a local business owner and friend, set off an ad hoc fireworks display on the bulkhead at the Front Beach. This simple act of patriotism, and the enjoyment of sharing a show with the people who were at the beach that night, has now grown into one of the most popular attractions in our area.

For more than 30 years now, the Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce has presented a fireworks show as a gift to residents and visitors in celebration of our Country’s Independence Day. Each year seems bigger and better, drawing larger crowds to enjoy this spectacular show.

Although it’s free to all who wish to come and watch, at a cost of nearly $20,000, this event could not be held without the donations of businesses, residents and visitors. Your gift of any amount would be greatly appreciated and will ensure that this joyous celebration continues. Donations should be directed to: POC Chamber Fireworks; Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce, Post Office Box 701, Port O’Connor, Texas 77982.

The fireworks show begins at dark, but come early and enjoy some fun at the beach. Local and out-of-town vendors, offering food and other items of interest, will be set up on King Fisher Beach all day. You can also enjoy visiting our restaurants and other businesses, checking out the fish being brought in to the docks, and strolling the bird walk at Boggy Nature park.

Although you can find everything you need here, you may want to come prepared to settle in and watch the show with lawn chairs/blankets, insect repellent, and your own chilled beverages and snacks.

Keep in mind that the beach road will be one-way all day and the road will be closed just before the show begins.

Let’s all come together to make this the greatest show ever! See you on July 7th!

– Bill Tigrett, Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce
