This 38” Bull Red was caught by Jenny Drapela with the help of her Dad, Mike Drapela, on June 3 in POC. Several boats were watching and waiting to see what it was. It took approximately 25 minutes to land it and it was then released back into the water. This is the biggest fish Jenny has ever caught and the family has fished POC for 38 years.
38″ Bull Red
Red Snapper!
Red snapper season is now open and on most days during the first week in June the weather conditions were ideal for offshore fishing. Dave Pope’s first snapper trips of the season were productive with snapper weighing from 10 to 12 lbs and from 24” to 28” long. The fish were caught over underwater structure or near gas platforms from 25 to 40 miles offshore. Ling, dolphin, king mackerel and amberjack were also caught but the red snappers were the targeted species for Dave and his fishing buddies, Petra and Ladd Hockey, Matt Stern and Tony Biggert.

Port O’Conor Fishing Report by Capt. Bob Hill
Well, its official, Summer is here. The boat ramps are full, the parking lots are overflowing, live bait is hard to find and of course there is plenty of boat traffic in the bays. The fishing is holding up pretty well under the extra pressure. Of course its getting pretty warm and the wind is still puffing most of the time.
Trout fishing has been pretty good in the bays. Waders are catching trout along the South shorelines. Croakers are producing over grass and sand. Artificials are producing as well, both soft plastics and topwaters. The best of it has come over shell for both waders and driftfishermen. San Antonio Bay shell has been good when the wind doesn’t blow from the North or the West.
The Lakes are getting better; it’s still mainly about reds but the trout numbers are getting better. Live shrimp or soft plastics have been the top choice for drifting the lakes.
The surf is holding lots of big trout but the wind hasn’t cooperated lately. Once we get some “flat” days I’m sure that the surf action will come on strong. Just remember, if you think it may be to rough to fish the surf, it is!
The jetties are holding fish but it as been a bit rough out there. Last week we had days where the waves at the end were 5 feet or more. When the wind is from the Southeast there isn’t really any place to hide. There are lots of black drum, reds and even a few snapper and trout. I haven’t seen anyone catching kings yet but I did see one jump out of the water this week. The sharks are here for the Summer as well. I have also started seeing quite a few tarpon.

Jaxson’s Catch
We own a beach house in the wonderful little town of “POC” and are down just about every weekend to fish. This past weekend was the first weekend we had the whole family together (post my older sister Tiffany’s wedding in March) to fish for Reds like we have done for the past three years in POC. It was an amazing weekend, and we hooked into a redfish run in unique fashion with 3 anglers on the boat – My sister, myself and my brother in law- all hooking a 30+ inch Bull Red all at once… even better, my brother in law doubled the fun by hooking two 30+ inch reds on his rod!
Needless to say it was a Majek parade of adrenaline, excitement, pure joy, and FUN trying to get all 4 Bull Reds successfully into the boat for photos before releasing them back to make someone else’s day! Above is the photo of the 3 of us with our 4 Bull Reds.
