Maizy

Maizy came back to us when her owner moved, always sad for owner and animal.

Maizy is about 2 years old, a lovely lady with gold accents amid all the white plus a magnificent tail! She dotes on your sole attention with no competition and would make a wonderful lap cat and “purr buddy” for an older family.

Skipper

Skipper is about 10 months old, a terrier mix but maybe with a titch of dachshund in him? Whatever, he’s a beautifully marked little guy and perpetually happy, always ready for a romp and a hug, a great family pup.

Come see Skipper, Maizy, and all the other animals at the Port Lavaca Animal Shelter, 201 Stringham Drive (across from the rodeo arena), Monday through Saturday, 10 to 2, or call the Calhoun County Humane Society, 553-8916.

You can also view them and other animals ready for adoption on line at:

Thanks and we’ll be waiting for you!

Kites Are Made Today

By Sarah Doggett

On May first we made kites. We flew them on the old playground and on the softball field. It flew very high. It was hard work. It fell a few times but it got back up. There was a very strong wind that day. It was very fun doing it. I felt very proud of my work; I hope we can fly the kites again.

Kites

By Anthony Luna

One day we made kites, but they were just for decoration. We made ones just like it but it could fly. It was so cool! All you need to make it is construction paper, string, hole punchers, streamers, and things to color with. I was running away from it because I thought it was a dragon! I had sooooooooo much fun. But Dylan jumped into mine and almost broke it. He kept doing it. All the kids did an excellent job because all of us followed the one best rule…NO CRYING!!! We all had fun. Clayton helped me so he got to fly my kite. My kite almost got eaten by a tree but I pulled it out.

! Kites Up High, Very High In the Sky!

By Amy Resendiz

The other day we flew kites on the old playground. I named mine Icy Bird. We made it with tape, paper, string, and don’t forget the streamers. We used the streamers for the tail of the kite. My kite was blue and had white streamers. They all flew very, very high up in the sky. Madison’s was the highest of all of them all. Then there was Shane’s. Then came me! The parts of a kite are a keel, a tail, and the string, of course! I put signs on mine saying Love Everywhere! I also put cool designs on it, too! We needed lots and lots of wind to make them fly. They were very, very wild kites because of the wind blowing very, very hard on the kites.

When We Made Kites

By John Rosenboom

My kite is red and orange with colorful dots. I made another kite, too but the second time we could really fly it. It was fun making kites. My sister hit my kite with a pinecone. Yesterday was a good day to fly my kite. I fixed my kite so it will fly good. I named it Fire Flames.

Remember to wish these friends and neighbors a Happy Birthday!

Kids Grow Their Own Lunch by Renee Hawes

The Port O’Connor Elementary Kindergarten class had a wonderful lunch on Friday in the classroom and cooked vegetables they picked from their garden. With the help of Renee Hawes and Brenda Smith, students steamed carrots, grilled new potatoes with onions, sauteed green beans and squash. They dipped fresh cucumbers and squash in Ranch Dressing and Tommy Smith brought some chicken fajitas to go with the vegetables from the garden.

Everyone tried a little bit of everything and most students said they enjoyed all of the food. It must have something to do with the fact that they have worked so hard in the garden to get the vegetables to grow. Even though we have already had the big meal, we will continue to visit the garden. Soon the tomatoes will be ready and we will make a cucumber and tomato salad in the classroom.

The students and I would like to thank Tommy and Brenda Smith for sharing their garden with us. Thanks to Mr. Clarence Albrecht for his many years of experience and knowledge. Also, thank you to Tom and Pat Eckstrom for sharing their green beans and new potatoes with us because ours are not quite ready yet. It is so nice to know that the community is so very supportive of Port O’Connor Elementary and its’ students.
