The Calhoun County library system, which has branches in Port O’ Connor, Port Lavaca, Seadrift and Point Comfort, will be holding a Food For Fines Month at all of the above locations throughout the month of February 2012.

All you have to do is bring in some canned goods to go against any outstanding book fines you might have accumulated. The canned goods collected through this event will be used for charitable ventures, so really this is a win-win situation for all involved.

However, it should be noted that the Food For Fines Month program can only be used for book fines due to you returning books late. Lost and damaged books and the fees related to those situations must still be paid for in the traditional manner.

Visit or call your local Library branch for more information.

Port O’Connor Service Club News by Sue Kubecka

A short meeting of the Service Club was held on Thursday morning, February 2nd. Pat Ekstrom led the meeting, due to the absence of our President, Janet Johnson, who was with her daughter, Debbie LeBoeuf while she underwent emergency surgery on a severely broken leg.

The main topic of discussion became the forthcoming benefit for Jerry Nutt, who died recently. Jerry had been one of the founding members of the BBQ team, The Smokin’ Nuts, who have become world famous with their grilling talents. Joyce Jordan, the coordinator of these benefit activities in our community, has asked the members for help in staging the BBQ dinner set for Saturday, March 3rd beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Community Center.

A sign up sheet was then circulated throughout the room to the membership and was quickly filled with the names of women who will assist in setting up the room for the dinner and cleanup afterward. An additional sign up sheet was passed to indicate the names of those members who would bake for the accompanying bake sale. The women of the Club are pretty famous for their skills and talents in preparing delightful desserts, so one should get there early before it’s sold out.

Additionally, Club members voted to make a donation for Ms. Jan Nutt, Jerry’s widow, to help defray current costs.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. in the meeting room in the back of the Community Center. Hope to see a full listing of members there!
