ATTENTION:

Anyone who would like to see a HEB Pantry Store in Port O’Connor, please call Customer Relations Dept., 1-800-432-3113, and tell them why you think we need HEB in our town.

I was told the more requests, the better the chance.

Marie Hawes

Re: Seadrift / POC Population

Joyce, in regards to your story on which is bigger:

I think that since Seadrift is an incorporated city, they only count the population in the city. I’ve run into this applying for grants where I’ve had to list the entire population of the area Seadrift VFD serves.

A LOT of people live outside of the Seadrift City limits and are not counted towards the city, but to the county total.

Example: the little road I live on in the county has 10 houses on it. If you count Wooldridge Rd., Cemetery Rd., Gates Rd., Dierlam Rd., Old Settlement Rd., Loop Rd., Swan Point, Maddoux Rd., you will find the population of the Seadrift area is more like 1600-1700. Not counting the two new subdivisions: Swan Point Landing and Falcon Point. Two other older subdivisions were just annexed by the city: Blasingham and Bierman.

Just letting you know,

Peter DeForest

Editor’s Reply: You’re right, Peter. I should have considered that before writing the article.

Thank You

The ELDON GOODEN family wants to express sincere gratitude for all the words, hugs, food, flowers, prayers, setting up tables and food, visiting and coming to the service for our beloved patriarch. Having your support and love has truly touched our hearts and soothed our souls as we grieve.

Thanks for showing us why Eldon loved this quaint little town and community on the coast. Our loss is great, but our family and friend’s love and support is greater!

Sincerely,

The Eldon Gooden Family

Loose Animals

In addition to dogs running loose, we now have had 2 goats, with collars and a pot belly pig following walkers on Monroe. This is very annoying and destructive to all the residents’ property. The goats eat our expensive plants and the pig tries to eat anything.

If you have these animals please keep them contained. People who come here don’t want to dodge stray animals of any kind.

Betty Korals

Editor, I thought the following would be an appropriate footnote to your post on the website regarding the opening of Oyster Season:

That “small portion” of open Texas waters couldn’t have been more strategic for authorities.

It was like leading lambs to a slaughter as Game Wardens circled the “down on your luck folks” trying to put food on the table and earn an honest living. It was like Sitting Bull at Custer’s Last Stand. Watermen and Sportsmen alike are under increasing attack by authorities as the State struggles for revenues and force a new breed of revenue collector on the citizens of this great State. It is shameful.

Community Bake Sale to help the Jerry Nutt Benefit will be Saturday, February 11 at Speedy Stop, starting at 7:30 a.m.

Movie Night will be Sunday, the 12th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Chapel, featuring “Courageous”.
All will receive a free bag of popcorn and bottled water upon arrival. This is an excellent family movie with a special message concerning parenting. This will be an excellent “Valentine Event” and everyone is welcomed!

An evening with Ric Gorden will be Monday, February 13, 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel. Most of us have enjoyed the music and message of Ric. He will be with us for an evening of great music, fun and games, dinner, and a great time of fellowship. There is no charge for this outstanding evening – an evening to remember.

The Chapel has a Sunday Morning Bible Study in Spanish for all our Spanish speaking community. These studies are planned to help attendees learn more about the Bible and enjoy fellowship with other Spanish-speaking folks. Hermano Jessie leads this group and everyone is invited to attend.

Fisherman’s Bible Institute will not meet on Valentine’s Day, but will continue its studies on Tuesday, February 21, from 7-9 p.m. Because it is hard for some of our students to climb the stairs at the parsonage, we are now meeting in the Chapel. If you are not a part of this group, you will find a warm welcome here. For more information, please call Pastor Joane (983-2619).

We just completed a Sea Academy class here at the Chapel and the next class will begin April 13. Those desiring to get the “Captain Licenses” should contact Captain Robert (361/816-3010) as soon as possible to be ready for this class.

March “madness” will be kicked off with our annual Chili Cook Off on Sunday, March 4, in honor of Papaw’s 91st Birthday. Everyone needs to get your ingredients together, because I am planning to win one! I have placed last for the last time! I am looking for some real judges, who know true Texas Chili when they taste it (and might be persuaded to help me win one)! Please call and tell me you are available!

A group of youth from Arkansas will be coming here for their Spring Break and to do ministry in Port O’Connor. They will arrive on Saturday, March 17 and will lead an area Youth Rally here at the Chapel. The Chapel will be packed with youth from across this area and you are welcome. This will be a lot of fun and an opportunity to meet a lot of different kids. More information will be forthcoming about the Arkansas Youths’ week in POC.

Fisherman’s Chapel is an interdenominational congregation whose goal is to provide everyone with the help they desire that will make this journey through life better and easier. One will always find a warm welcome at any and all our activities and you are urged to, “Come, grow with us!”

As you read this article, the 17th Annual Church sponsored “Sweetheart Banquet” will be history. I tell you, it was a lot of fun and a lot of very hard work. We had over 23 people volunteer to cook, decorate the Community Center, sell tickets, design and print the program and simply do anything necessary for the success of the Banquet. The Church Youth did an outstanding job serving the food and drinks and for this we are very thankful. Thanks to all who purchased tickets and filled the Community Center; it is because of you that we continue this tradition. In the next issue of Dolphin Talk we will have pictures of the Banquet and a complete report of the award winners.

Brother Donnie Martin, our Pastor, and Shirley Martin, his wife, are quickly becoming acclimated to Port O’Connor. Our Church has quickly fallen in love with Bro. Donnie and Shirley. His sense of humor and outstanding preaching is winning everyone’s love and appreciation. You are invited to our morning and evening services each Sunday and be moved by Bro. Donnie Martin’s sermons. Our Sunday morning service is at 11:00 a.m. and Sunday evening is at 6:00 p.m.

The Spring Senior Adult Retreat will be at Camp Zephyr in Sandia, Texas on the banks of Lake Corpus Christi March 5-8. this four day camp will be an exciting time for all who attend. All senior adults over 55 are invited to attend. The special guests will be Dr. Jimmy Arnold, teaching the Bible; Bro. George Yarbrough giving the devotions; preaching by “Cowboy Church” pastor David Park and the music by Marcos and Sue Gohlke. All attendees will enjoy the food, fellowship, rest and relaxation and the spiritual atmosphere provided by a fantastic program. Cost is $100 per person, which includes all meals, motel room lodging and all the special treats. For additional information, call Doyle Adams at 361-983-4866 or you may call the Camp direct to make reservations at 361-547-2488.

We are looking forward to Easter this year. The Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be Saturday, April 7. Candice Stryker is again in charge of the egg hunt and is looking forward to a big turnout of children. The Annual Easter Sunrise Service will be at the King Fisher Beach Pavilion on Sunday morning, April 7, 2012 at 7:00 a.m. Mark your calendar for these important dates!

See you in church Sunday!

DiMaggio

Meet DiMaggio, our “Lanky and Lean Energy Machine”. About 1 1/2 years old, he’s a hound mix, always ridiculously happy and ready to play.
DiMaggio needs a big, fenced yard, an active family and lots of attention. He’s very deserving of a loving home, maybe YOURS?

Henley

Henley, our hound, needs a home! A beagle mix about a year old, he’s a beautifully marked guy, very friendly, high energy and is good with other dogs. Because he’s a scent hound, this is his “job” so he will need a large and securely fenced yard or that nose will take him many miles away. He will make a great family dog as he thrives on attention.

Come see Henley, DiMaggio, and all the other animals at the Port Lavaca Animal Shelter, 201 Stringham Drive (across from the rodeo arena), Monday through Saturday, 10 to 2, or call the Calhoun County Humane Society, 553-8916.

You can also view them and other animals ready for adoption on line at www.calhouncountyhumanesociety.org

Thanks and we’ll be waiting for you!
