Contrary to our report in the Sept. 9 issue, the recreational quota for red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico has not been increased and the October 1 closure date has not been suspended. Our report was taken from the NMFS, NOAA Federal Register, Vol. 76, No. 156, dated August 12, 2011.

According to the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, there will be no fall season. The Dolphin regrets distributing this misinformation. It was presented in good faith, relying on the accuracy of the NMFS, NOAA report.

“In June, the Council requested NOAA Fisheries implement an emergency rule that would increase the recreational red snapper quota by 345,000 pounds for the 2011 fishing year, as well as give the Regional Administrator authority to reopen the recreational red snapper season later in the year if quota remains. But because there is no quota leftover from the summer season, there is no opportunity for a 2011 fall season.”

Third grade students at Seadrift School have been learning map skills. They even used technology in their room to create a classroom map while learning to use the polyvision white boats:

Biomes and Ecosystems
All elementary classes at Seadrift School are learning about different biomes and ecosystems.  Third grade has been learning about characteristics of the deciduous forest such as the layers, weather, and plant life.  We have begun creating a deciduous forest display in the hallway outside our classroom for all students and visitors to see.  Next week we will begin learning about the animals that live there and their adaptations for survival.

A group of third graders at Seadrift School were rewarded with lunch in the classroom after meeting their homework reading goal. Other students will soon be meeting their goals and enjoying their reward.

Major Brian Moore, recently returning from his second tour in Iraq, and son, Christian, spent two weeks with his parents, Charles and Joy Fryou of Port O’Connor. They spent most of their time on Matagorda Peninsula fishing, boating, four-wheeling, tubing, and mostly just relaxing and having lots of fun.
