At the Tuesday, May 3rd Port O’Connor School PTO meeting, which was the last meeting of the year, Beverly Wyatt from the Texas Education Agency presented Port O’Connor Elementary with the Title I, Part A Distinguished Performance Award.

The Texas Education Agency’s Title I, Distinguished School’s prestigious designation recognizes schools that have consistently demonstrated strong academic performance over a three-year period.

Port O’Connor Elementary has achieved a campus rating in Spring 2008, 2009, and 2010 of Exemplary, met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2009 and 2010, maintained a campus residing population of 40% or more low-income in 2010-2011, and was a Title I, Part A campus in 2008-2009, 2009-2010, and 2010-2011. The award states: In recognition for ensuring that all children have the opportunity to obtain a high quality education and reach proficiency on challenging State academic standards and assessment for the 2010-2011 school year. Congratulations students and teachers, to another successful academic year!

Congratulations to Melissa Albrecht, Jesse Hernandez, and Natalie Harper, our graduates that were awarded the Naomi Albrecht PTO Scholarship. We wish you great success in your continuing education!

Students in Kindergarten, 4th, and 6th grade demonstrated how our ebooks subscription works. It is a great tool for students to further their learning while having fun on the computer. Even our youngest students are becoming computer savvy. Students can access the website from school or home by going on line. The collection of books are available 24 hours a day. Students can take their AR tests on the titles helping them reach their reading goals. If your child wishes to log in at home, contact the school for the log in information. This info will also be sent home with your student at the end of the school year, so be sure to check their backpack! Reading helps students excel in all other subjects. The more they read, the better they will do.

This year was a big success. We were able to fund: 3-year eBooks subscription in Science and Math, 2 new projectors, portable sound system, 2 new soccer goals, soccer balls, die cut equipment, various student/teacher awards, 3 scholarships, and of course our annual field trip to Splashway Water Park on June 1st. New PTO officers for the 2011-2012 school year are: Rachel Redding- President, Dawn Ragusin- Vice President, Andy Munsch- Treasurer, and Lucy Branch- Secretary. We look forward to raising money and having fun doing it! We will soon be out asking for donations for our biggest fundraiser, the Halloween Carnival. We would like to purchase another eBooks subscription in other subjects, as well as other technology.

Congratulations to the two lucky winners of our door prize drawing! A student won the $25 Walmart card, and a parent won the $50 Walmart card.

We hope to see you at Open House next school year…we will have another drawing at that time.

Thank You Port O’Connor for your involvement with our student success!

1. Raise the flag to the top of the pole, and then lower to half-staff position, which is halfway between the top and bottom of the pole. This is the proper way to fly a flag at half-staff.

2. At noon, raise the flag once again to the top of the pole, full staff position.

3. At sunset, ceremonially (slowly) lower the flag and store for the night. The American flag should never be flown at night unless it is properly illuminated by a spotlight trained on it.
