Girls With Wings Presentation: Aviation Inspiration By Jasmine Gordon

The Girl Scouts of Calhoun County with Girls With Wings founder, Lynda Meeks, at Calhoun County Airport.

“Where would you like to fly today?” Girls With Wings (GWW) founder, Lynda Meeks, asked The Girl Scouts of Calhoun County. The girls stood before aeronautical maps, charts and flight instruments necessary to learn to fly at Calhoun County Airport on Saturday, May 7th.

After deciding Disney World was a perfect flying destination, Lynda began the interactive GWW presentation teaching the girls “everything” they need to know to be a pilot. This fun hands-on format has been given to over three thousand girls. “We can educate our girls as we entertain them,” affirms Lynda. “They love the chance to learn something new!”

Lynda, an 18 year career pilot for the military and the airlines, has been staying “in the air” by spreading her message that “Girls need Flight Plans, not Fairy Tales!”™ By the end of the presentation each of the girls was able to make radio calls and fly their pretend planes to Florida. Says troop leader Kelly, the girls learned “if they wanted to be a pilot there is nothing stopping them – opened another whole field to them. Young girls need to know that just because most pilots are men doesn’t mean women can’t do it.”

Each of the girls received a patch for their vest and a take home bag with more information about aviation as well as a chance to sit in a Cessna 172 and handle the controls. “I don’t usually have the ability to take the girls out to sit in an actual airplane after the presentation. To see their eyes light up when I told them they would was really something special,” said Lynda. “Thanks to the folks at Calhoun Air Center for making that possible.”

GIRLS WITH WINGS:
Girls With Wings, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization using women in aviation to inspire girls to achieve their full potential via an interactive website, flight training scholarships and presentations to girls’ groups and other organizations. If you wish to schedule a presentation, make a donation or receive further details, please contact Lynda Meeks at LMeeks@girlswithwings.com or 216.577.6131.

The Historical Book Committee of the POC Service Club is avidly seeking information concerning the First Families of Port O’Connor; those that can trace their residence here as of December 31, 1929. We urge members of the following families and others to share with us photos of the early families, physical addresses of residences and years of residence, stories with times of their involvement in POC life. Information regarding the School, its location and teachers, and grades attending is also desired. Also, information concerning the stores, entertainment, churches; primarily, what the daily life was in the first 20 years in the developing area of our coast.

We are seeking information from some of the following families and any others during that time period:

The Whittaker, Raby, Munsch, Goldman, Lewis, Hawes, Ragusin, Harris, Villareal, and Apostalo families and relatives.

If you prepared a “board” of your family with story and pictures for the Centennial, perhaps you could share some of that information with us. And if you or any of your relatives have data or photos pertaining to this time period and are willing to share, or know of others who resided here then, please contact our President, Janet Johnson, 983-4733 or Sue Kubecka, Chairman, 798-0560. All information and photos would be carefully and professionally recopied and returned to the owner with much gratitude.

Mindy

Mindy is a Schnauzer mix about a year old. She is a very small girl; you can hold her under your arm with room to spare. Friendly and energetic, she is also Cute Plus!

BeeGee

You might think BeeGee is “just another ginger tom” but take our word for it, he’s not. About 8-9 months old, he has loads of personality, and though he can’t sing like those guys, he’s very talkative and always has a paw outside his cage, trying to entice you to come and visit, tell him how wonderful he is.

Hershey

Hershey was debuted about a month ago but he looked rather a mess. He’s now been professionally groomed and ooh, la la! Either a Cairn terrier or Schnauzer mix (he certainly looks like a Schnauzer now!), he’s 5 years old but has the energy and happy outlook of a young puppy. Hershey has many good years ahead of him and will be your instant best friend.

Come see Hershey, Mindy, BeeGee, and all the other animals at the Port Lavaca Animal Shelter, 201 Stringham Drive (across from the rodeo arena), Monday through Saturday, 10 to 2, or call the Calhoun County Humane Society, 553-8916. You can also view him and other animals ready for adoption on line at www.calhouncountyhumanesociety.org Thanks and we’ll be waiting for you!
