Saturday, April 9th was the date of our Spring Garage Sale and many members came to work on Thursday following our meeting and returned on both Friday and Saturday. And, as usual, we were aided by our wonderfully caring and energetic husbands who are always there with the necessary transportation and able hands to load and unload furniture and sporting goods and box after box. But, somehow, Club members and their husbands were also helped by several people; many of whom have no affiliation with the Port O’Connor Service Club and were just being of assistance. The husband of a new member devoted his energies toward 3 fun-filled days as “Johnny on the Spot”. A huge thank you to Andy Westling. Additionally, one very energetic man was also there lending his assistance each day; Jerry Tucker is no stranger to our community but an always welcome visitor. He said that he was glad to help as he had nothing else to do those days. And we all know that when an activity of the Service Club is taking place, we find both Pat and Bob Irwin ready to help as well as Eric Escobar of Port Lavaca. Eric will be entering college in the fall, but just wanted to work one more Sale. Anna Gilley, our newest member, received her baptism by fire working each day. And my personal gratitude to Joyce Rhyne who somehow translated my strange prose to our ad that made sense and attracted the eye of the reader.

At 8:00 a.m. the exterior ribbon was removed around the Pavilion and many eager shoppers entered to find their special item as they moved around fully loaded table after table to look, and shop they did. Then, completing their list of wanted items, they returned to the Cash Out table as manned by both Janet Johnson, President and member Debbie LeBoeuf. Other members were on the floor to provide necessary information to all the shoppers concerning price and size.

At the end of the Pavilion shoppers with a sweet tooth found the Bake Sale in process, but they had to hurry to make certain their special dessert was still available. Under the repeated chairmanship of Sally Ragusin, many cakes and cookies were available for purchase. But those items literally flew off the shelves to the delight of their purchasers who caught them!

Returning once again were representatives of The Harbor of Port Lavaca who created an oasis for the young set midst the chaos of the Sale. These talented women offered to the children a choice of different styles of face painting and several games to occupy their time.

Three hard days of work ended late Saturday afternoon, but those days were made much easier due to the capable chairmanship of the Sale by Biddie Hileman. Not only was she there early in the mornings providing soft drinks and sweet nibbles (energy raisers) for the workers, but she made certain that the very smallest detail was attended to.

A round of applause to both Biddie Hileman and Sally Ragusin for their efforts; “We couldn’t have done it without you”!

The next meeting of the Service Club will be Thursday, May 5th at 10:00 a.m. and will be held in the back room of the Community Center. If any female member of this Community desires to be involved with working towards the betterment of our area, please consider joining the Service Club. We welcome all interested women at any time at our meetings; contact Shirley Gordon, Membership Chairman, 983-4365 or Janet Johnson, President, 983-4733 for further information. After all, you just may meet your neighbor here!

We have an opportunity to help one of our neighbors, Nancy Harborth, who recently was hospitalized. Blood donated in her name will benefit Nancy, who required a great deal of blood during her hospital stay.

A Blood Drive is tentatively scheduled for June 30 from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Port O’Connor Fire Station. However, South Texas Blood and Tissue Center will not conduct the drive unless there are 15 people who will sign up right away agreeing to donate blood.

Please call Lynn Rhodes by April 23 and tell her you will help by attending the June 30 Blood Drive. Lynn’s number is: 361-655-2084.

Chapel Happenings By Erny McDonough

“He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today!” is the song of this morning! The only reason we celebrate “Good Friday” is because we know that “Easter is on its way!” We are looking forward to the Sunrise Service, 7:00 a.m., front beach, this coming Sunday morning. We trust that all will participate in this special event! Following this special time together, we will gather at the Chapel at 10:00 a.m. for our continued study from the Book of Acts. The Super Church kids will be having an Easter Egg Hunt during the morning activities with over 30 dozen eggs and prizes. It will be a great Easter celebration and all are invited.

The Reverend Joane McDonough is our special pulpit guest beginning this past Sunday (April 17). She is an ordained minister and is using the material God has been giving her concerning “Bridging the Gap”. She has taught this material on many levels, including for the county court systems, schools, Child Protective Services, ladies retreats and individual churches. One day, we believe, Joane will be a published author with this material. Each Sunday, for at least eight weeks, Joane will be preaching using this material in the 11:00 a.m. service at the Chapel. Everyone is invited.

Fisherman’s Bible Institute classes are almost over, and we are beginning a new teaching time for the ladies of this area. Joane will be teaching “Search for Significance” each Thursday. Books have been ordered, but additional materials may be obtained for interested learners. The classes will begin May 5. For further information, please call Joane at 983-4240.

The Chapel will be hosting another Sea Academy with classes beginning on April 29. These classes help qualify students to serve as boat captains. Interested persons should call the Sea Academy at 361/758-6184 or the instructor, Captain Robert at 361/816-3010.

Friday Night Youth is going strong with a host of kids from our community meeting here for “good, safe fun and food” each Friday beginning at 7:00 p.m., except the first Friday of each month. There are always a lot of things to do and kids enjoy “hanging out” at the Chapel.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Several of the ladies have already begun preparations for special gifts for each mother present at the Chapel that morning, May 8. Joane will be the guest speaker, and every mom will be treated as royalty, for they truly are! We invite all moms to come and enjoy your special day with us at the Chapel.

Papaw, Joane and I were honored to host the annual Royal Ranger’s District Pow Wow at our place in Smiley this past weekend (April 15-17). The event brought boys together from Beaumont to San Antonio, and from the Valley to the Hill Country. Unofficially, there were about 850 boys and men present for this special event and the boys were treated to many activities, including Paint Ball, Zip Lines, and many other fun activities. Of special interest was the “cardboard box boat races”. Boys were to “boats” from old boxes and placed a two “man” team in them to race a prescribed course on the pond. It was fun to see the boats come apart, capsize, and a few actually made the distance. Most of the “cardboard oars” did not finish the race and the boys were forced to use their hands for paddles. But, far more than just the fun and myriad of activities was the fact that almost 175 boys and men accepted Jesus as their personal Savior during the weekend of events! We were honored that we were chosen to host such a special event. Eternity alone will tally the benefits!

Fisherman’s Chapel is an interdenominational congregation who wants to minister to everyone in this community. We offer bilingual events and have Hermano Jessie and Hemana Angie Alderete helping us reach the Spanish speaking residents. You will always find a warm welcome at the Chapel, and all are urged to, “Come, grow with us!”
